I'm back

I don't know how many will remember me from last winter. Last winter was my first wintersowing. I wintersowed about 200 containers and then found out my boyfriend of 4 1/2 years was breaking up with me on January 15, 2010. I found and bought a house 2/19/10, and moved all of my jugs (and other belongings, of course!) to my new house. I ended up trying to accomplish too many things at the new house and all I have left from my wintersowing is one catalpa tree. 8/30/10 I sold that house and moved in with my now husband (married 11/30/10!).

My husband is awesome. He's done wintersowing, hydroponics, home made barrel composters, you name it. Basically, he's a gardening nerd like me! We have the family farmhouse built in 1905 so that is an ongoing process of remodeling and maintenance. However, I decided that I better start a proper garden in the spring. Tax return will be purchasing a new rear-tine tiller. I have a Mantis but need something with more muscle as well.

I just now decided I'm going to go ahead and WS more than just tomatoes and peppers. I want to start some flowers as well. I would like suggestions on some perennial to start with. I'm not going to do more than about 50 jugs. I remember all the ins and outs of Wsing but have a hard time choosing which seeds to try. I'll be making a trip to town later this week (pending our snowstorm here in the midwest!) and just want to pick up some packs of seeds from Menards or Walmart. I have endless supply of baby Black eyed Susans from my uncle and starts of Plume grass, so anything that will kind of go with that. I'll definitely be picking up some hollyhock and hibiscus!

I am also currently working on procuring some Pro-Mix. We have a local distributor for Pro-mix but I don't know if I'm going to be able to get some as an individual, and I don't believe they distribute to any local retailers. If I get snowed in this week (its just beginning to ice!) I'll be preparing some of those jugs I've saved.

I discovered gloriosa daisies last year and just love them. I got the seeds at cheapseeds.com but I think they are pretty common. The seeds I got had a nice variety of bright yellows and some with marron too. They are annuals, but they should reseed nicely.

I've also had really good results wintersowing other daisies, coneflowers and dianthus (all perennials).

I wintersowed gloriosa daisies from cheapseeds last year. I did get some of them planted and the blooms were very pretty. I need to add Goblin blanket flower to my list!

Kayla, I remember you and your hurried move - to that cute little house but with quite an amount of outside space...?

Life sends us in some surprising directions doesn't it. Congratulations marriage/house (2!)/move....you've been busy!

I'll let the other Z5ers point you on basic easy seeds to start with....Are you thinking vegetable or ornamental, do you have sun or shade? Welcome back!

    Hi bookjunky,
Yes,I remember you, welcome back, as a matter of fact, I was just thinking about you,and was going to ask if any one had heard from you,a few of our friends ahve gone through some bad times this year,so it is nice to see you back with happy news. You had the dogs,is that correct, and bought a trailer????
Congratulations on a new chapter in your life, sounds like the opening of a good book.:0)
What are you looking to sow?Where in the midwest are you now?

morz9 - I want to WS the veggies that it is most beneficial to WS. All sun for now. We live on the prairie so very little shade right now.

cAROL - You are correct with the dogs, two in fact, and the husband has a feral dog that runs around the farm and rides on the cows's backs. I also have acquired 6 farm cats (four of which are kittens I bottle fed from 2 to 6 weeks of age and are now about 7 mos old). I had bought a stickbuilt house but it resembled a modular from the outside. I am looking to sow veggies and low maintenance perennials, or highly reseeding annuals, all sun loving. I am in the same town as before the breakup but to the west of town instead of the east.

    Hi bookjunky,

I'm glad to see you back. It sounds like things have worked out just fine for you. Thank goodness!

As for what to plant, I wouldn't know cuz I try everything I can get my hands on. I'm sure you'll end up with some beautiful things.

Welcome back. I remember you. I get ProMix from Menards (Chicago subs). As a matter of fact, I just bought a three bags on Sun. A bit frozen but they'll be fine after a few days, weeks in the garage. "highly reseeding annuals" - coreopsis. I have a lot of seeds, I can send them to you. BTW - congratulations!

Yes, I remember you! Congratulations - it sounds like you have had a whirlwind year, but happy!

A few reseeding annuals that I can think of are four o'clocks, nicotiana, marigolds, and borage. All reseeded pretty heavily in my beds. The nicotiana will take a little shade, but I think generally it likes full sun, especially as you're farther north of me.

As for perennials, I am in a totally different zone, so I will mostly leave that to the others. The only one I can think of that would definitely be cold-hardy enough for you that I grow is columbine, and it will probably want more shade than you have.

But hey, you can always sow more trees to go with that catalpa (love those)!

I sowed some coreopsis last winter. I even believe I had some blooms. I think the only seeds I saved from last year are my blue morning glories and some brocolli seeds. Do brocolli do well wintersown?

We actually had about a dozen catalpas that we planted but then decided that's where my veggie garden will be so out they came.

I am happy to announce I have 21 gallon milk jugs prepared for soil and seeds. I have been given the green light to obtain a bale of promix from a local distributor through a personal contact. I hope she is able to deliver it to me by the weekend. The roads are looking good enough to go to town and get seeds.

I was out of work Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Our power has been out 2 days now and looks like it will be up to a week. Thankfully, we have a wood stove and still have hot water.

Hello, I'm a newbie on the WS site. Old Hat on the Roses. Congratulations on your mariage and new home! You sound very happy. I do have some seeds for trade. But I have a lot of 'Amaranthus Love-Lies-Bleedings'. Send me an e-mail.

I'm the proud owner of a new 3.8 cubic foot back of Promix! Free of charge to boot! Jealous anyone? It is unthawing in my heated breezeway.

I also made it to town today despite 6 inches of snow this morning. Walmart didn't have seeds yet. However, I got a load of seeds from Menards and Rural King!

I also got 18 gallon totes to start my worm bin! Exciting day!

OK, I'm jealous (I hear so much about ProMix and have never seen it) That's the sign of a very good friend - one who will give you dirt. I have a great neighbor who has done that for me, she's given me both dirt and compost on my birthday.

Who but other gardeners could understand. An exciting day is worms, seeds, dirt, nothing you could explain to anyone who doesn't grow things ;-)

Congratulations on your acquisition of free Pro-Mix!! I scooped almost 55 gal. from my #2 bale of Fafard's yesterday and took it to my daughter so she can get started WS. She was going to use regular dirt but I think I convinced her she'd regret it. She doesn't know it yet but I bought her a bag of dried worm castings for her birthday along with a large bottle of seaweed extract. Who could ask for anything better?!

Garden, I think I am your daughter, your just not my mother, but there is a holiday coming up,I like stuff.
