I would say yes. I have never winter sowed it, but it self sows for me. It even self sows, grows and blooms between cracks in the sidewalk.

I have Winter Sowed it and it comes up great. Plenty of time for it to grow and bloom and then it will reseed itself. I've done Amaranthus caudatus and Amaranthus Hopi Red Dye.

Amaranths are great WSers - go for it! The "booms" are not flowers with petals, more attractive heads of seed. The purple and red (burgundy) varieties add so much color to the garden with their leaves even before they start making plumes. They are wonderful if anyone is like me and mostly grows flowers so that I can wander the yard with a basket and cut for bouquets in the house - the amaranths are part of almost every arrangement.

And they reseed wildly in my yard (well that makes them sound like an invader and they are not) and seem to pick more interesting spots for themselves than I would have! I really love them.

They are just an awesome set of plants. If you could make up a list for 'Martian Gardens' I would put Amaranths at the top of the list. They are strange, bizarre and extraordinarily beautiful and utterly weird.

They're easy to WS, just surface sow the seeds, they sprout by mid spring if not much sooner. Plant in small clumps via hunk-o-seedlings or sow farther apart and plant singly--they work either way.

I've done llb with great success. It started sprouting at low temps in early spring and was unharmed by later frosts in it's closed up milk jug. I've also successfully done the poinsettia types successfully. Pygmy torch hasn't done as well; it sprouts but stays way too small all summer. Some only grew 4-5", barely visible. It's volunteers did a little better.

Amaranths are fantastic - I love the 'Hot Biscuits' variety, which is 4-6' tall with green leaves and buff-tan seed heads. It's an easy one to WS and grow.
