How many???

15 years ago

...new-to-you seed types are you winter sowing this year? Are the seeds in most of your containers things you've never grown before or are you growing lots more of the same things you WS in past years? I was uncertain about the method last time and cautiously sowed just a single jug of fountain grass, astilbe, lady's mantle and a few others. This year I'm taking a leap of faith with over 40 new seed types I've never grown before including blue-eyed grass, St. John's wort, maiden grass, veronica, salvia, hydrangea, toad lily, caryopteris & spirea among others. I've got three new lupine types and Echinacea 'Pow Wow Wild Berry' along with Lobelia cardinalis, lavender, Russian sage, Small's penstemon and Japanese iris. Would love to hear what others are hoping to see sprouting in their containers when the green wave rolls in.

    Most everything I am growing is totally new to me at growing in one shape or another. I would say at least 99%!! Though some I have read on for several years and totally lusted after. So a lot of these seeds are things I really really really want. Some I meant to sow last winter but family life sometimes gets in the way around here. This year I just said screw it no matter what no one or nothing is stopping me by george!!

    I didn't mention what I am growing but as of right now I am making up for 2 winters. So when I give a container count that is actually the different types. I have close to 200 types of seed I am growing this year!! I tried cutting my list down but as soon as I do, I find another "must grow". LOL.

    By the way when are you adding your container count to the zone wars?? Are you just going to hit us all with a bomb one day, lol??

    Gardenweed..my wish list this year consist of seeds I really am interested in adding to my flowerbeds. Last year was my first year trying WS and there were many that didn't fit into my desired cottage gardening theme I was trying to create. I think it must have been an omen that the ones that were planted in coffee and cold drink cups didn't survive or germinate. I am hoping to be able to pull my original idea more together this year.

    Pippi, your coffee and cold drink container plants didn't survive? Oh no. Most of mine are in those.

    All the seeds I have sown are new to me. Now I know why the delphinium didn't sprout last year when trying to grow indoors....

  • 15 years ago

    I'm excited about my perennials period. I've bought a many of Lupine, delphiniums and Foxglove only to disappear because I cut the flower off for my vases.

    But I am excited about Columbines, Gayfeather, and English Daisy's.

    Now I need more room to put what all that succesfully survives.

    I sowed the following seeds that I'd never grown before: agastache, bleeding heart, gaillardia, virginia bluebells, primrose, rose campion. I sowed a lot of seeds for plants I've grown from seed before, but some those are annuals that need to be sown every year.

    New to me, have these seed packs to put out later: Cut & Come Again zinnias, supposed to be butterfly/hummingbird magnets. Small Fry tomatoes, dwarf patio tomatoes that only need an 8 inch pot & are recommended for my area. Hope I can grow these!

    Last year they were ALL new to me since I'd never heard of winter sowing. I'd always grown from seed in a sunny window with marginal success. I grew false indigo, daylily and hosta seeds in that sunny window but plenty of other things sprouted only to get leggy, fall over, wither and die.

    Winter sown sprouts are just amazing and once they get their second leaves, the ones that look like their mature leaves, it's just the most exciting thing to see. Suddenly the green wave rolls in and you have more sprouts than places to plant them.

    gardenunusual - Connie in TN used only cold drink cups to WS last year and she had great success. Don't give up hope for yours. Different techniques work better for some than for others. You'll find what works best for you. I had the most success with milk jugs. I WS 2 liter bottles in the same manner as milk jugs but had lower germination rates in those for whatever reason. I didn't get my tail in a knot over it, just jotted down a note in my log so I wouldn't make the same mistake again. I set my WS containers on my shaded breezeway, more for convenience than any other reason. I got terrific germination albeit a week or two later than folks whose containers were in the sun.

    ladyrose65 - the lupine & foxglove I WS last year grew and bloomed first year from seed. I snapped a picture of the white lupine in bloom but was too busy watering during the drought to stop and photo the foxglove.

    river_crossroads - the grape tomato plants I grew via WS last year grew so tall my neighbor had to put a 6 ft. pole atop the 6 ft. pole in the container. You may want to prepare yourself!

    Every year the "swap" brings new to me seeds...I am very excited about Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate this year. There are so many others I can not remember. My DD commented that this time last year I had over 70 containers sown, this year only 11 so far. Hopefully will make some headway this weekend.

    thank you for the reassurance, gardenweed. I did poke holes on the sides of my containers as well as the bottoms, in case the bottoms don't drain. With the milkjugs there's sort of a built in cover, which I like. I'm trying everything from playdoh containers to old mouthwash that had been sitting under the sink for yonks. The latest is the Simply Orange juice containers, although I do have to call on my husband to drill holes in the bottom. I like that the bottom sort of comes up in the center, so it's not completely flat on the ground.

    My "completely flat on the ground" milk jugs looked like this in April:

    {{gwi:350178}}

    {{gwi:252893}}

    {{gwi:252895}}

    I never had to water any of my containers and couldn't really say if any seeds rotted from too much wet after the amazing number of sprouts I got in every jug.

    So far I've only sown 12 containers, but usually don't sow much this early anyway. Half are new seeds and half are seeds I sowed last year (with limited success so trying again).

    Later in the winter I'll sow the rest of the perennials - some old ones and some new ones. I just bought $44 worth of seeds from Swallowtail, because I was sucked in by their Foxgloves, Columbine etc. Bought some Echinacea 'Pow wow Berry' too! So I'm excited to try some new things.

    As for annuals and veggies, well most of those are the same ones every year, like tomatoes, basil, Cardinal climber, Melampodium, Yvonnes salvia, etc.

    gardenusual..A lot of people have success starting their seeds in coffee or cold drink cups so don't let my experience discourage you. We had 55 in.of snow in one weekend and all was fine when the snow covered them. I had them inside a Sterlite container that had plenty of holes poked in bottom and top but when the snow finally melted a month or more later, it was so muddy out in the back yard that it was hard to get to them, without dragging the mud back in the house or slipping while outside, so they dried up. Once they dried up, there's nothing you can do to revive them. Make sure your cups have plenty of drainage holes in them. Try it at least once..then you'll know. I prefer the milk jugs myself. Maybe my soil wasn't moist enough in the beginning but you would have thought being covered in 55 in. of snow would have been enough moisture to last for a while. Maybe I should have covered the cups with Press and Seal in addition to having them inside that Sterlite container. Who knows, I may try it again sometime just to experiment.
