Sounds sorta like overkill but what can I say. I had two big leaves that I started about 5mo ago and the babies are pretty big now and I havent yet separated them and checked the mother leaf and it is still strong and stiff , but it was a big leaf to begin with about 3inch. Rachels is a good place to look at and her babies arent as big as yours or mine either. It seems rather difficult to separate from the mother cause then you have to make a decision whether to keep mother or not. But it takes so long. Anyway have a look here

Once the mother leaf has served its purpose there is no need for it to remain on the plant.

You can cut it off at soil level and replant the leaf if it is still in healthy condition. If it made only one baby it likely won't make another, but you can try. Or just take a healthy leaf from your baby to make another.

You can just cut it off at soil level because often the mother leaf will take off more than its share of the roots and leave the babies with fewer roots.

The mother leaf continues to grow when you put it down to root baby plants, so when you take it off that will leave more room for the little leaves to spread out and nutrients for the babies.
