Finally, a baby!

Hey everyone,

This is an update to my thread on "Leaf Cuttings: roots but no leaves" WOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I looked at one of my african violet leaves yesterday (the one that had a "whitish colored v" on the tip of a whitish colored stem that was attached to the side of the original leaf stem) There is now one little itty bitty leaf resting on the top of the soil, it has recently emerged from beneath the soil.

I have been waiting what feels like years for something to happen (I potted this leaf with rooting hormone about 3-4 months ago). I said I would let you guys know when something happened and well here is my note. I'll have a photo once it gets big enough to take a picture.

Hi Elizabeth,
This is one of the reasons I don't use rooting hormone. The leaf had to fill the container with roots first before it sent up babies.

Yes, I'm impatient when it comes to anything, so waiting 3-4 months to see this baby... oh my! lol.

Thanks. I realize now why rooting hormone is not the best. I cut the tips off other african violet leaves that I dipped in rooting hormone and put them in fresh soil (they had already created roots, but I think it would of been more prohibitive to leave them with the roots they created from the rooting hormone on them then to "start over"). I'm hoping maybe they will sprout faster!

It's the nature of the hormone; it encourages roots while suppressing suckers (which is what you're trying to get!).
