What sprouts do you have?

Waiting for the snow to melt, I'd like to hear what is sprouting for everyone so far. Bring on the zone envy. I'll just live vicariously through the rest of you until the greenwave makes it my way.

Gee, Mary, for a moment there the only green I had was my envy, lol, thinking how the heck could she have sprouts in zone 5 already?! I was somewhat relieved to see that you don't, but that for some reason want to torture yourself by having others list their sprouts, lol.

With all the snow (and rain) we've been having, I haven't even made my usual rounds of peeking in the containers on a daily basis. But I doubt I have anything yet anyway.

    Soon, soon...

    :)

With all the snow I haven't checked recently, but I don't think there are any yet. They'd be goners for sure with the weather we've had -- third snow storm of the month going on now.

Appropriately enough, I just found my Hollyhock "Double Icicles" had sprouted!

I was out shoveling the snowicane today and checked my containers...well guess what I have three that are sprouted! Centaurea montana, Prarie Smoke and Centranthus ruber!!! Those little seeds know it is almost Spring snow or no snow! Carltoo I am zone 6 b so you should check your containers!!!

Wow, Joann, centranthus ruber - I'm impressed! I've tried for three or four years to WS this with no luck. I didn't even bother this year. I just bought a few plants last summer, lol! Congrats!

I won't know until about a foot more snow melts, LOL! But I dot' really expect to see anything until late march. I got myself in a tizzy last year when other in my zone started seeing sprouts a month sooner than I did, but by early April I had more than enough sprouts!

KALE that has finally resurfaced from under four feet of snow -- seeds from Botanical Interests last year that did not sprout in direct sow to my raised bed garden. These were done one or two to a half toilet role inside a lettuce box -- 24 rolls, 25 sprouts today -- the first day back in the sun!
    Leaf lettuce
    Arugula
Spinach )these will all go to Food Bank container gardens)
Snow in summer (seeds from 2004) and what looks suspiciously like a summer squash, possibly from the compost
    Blue Stem grass from wintersown.org

My first year and I love this method!

Hope to see pansies and primroses soon...maybe.

Diggerdee..this is my second year trying for the Centranthus so I am thrilled but there are just a few tiny teeny sprouts so it's a long way to go to having plants!

Torture is right. After reading through all these posts I had to run out and check my jugs just in case wishful thinking increases the rate of germination. On the other hand, reading all these reports of success with veggies had me starting my onion seeds today. As I went through my seed box I wondered if there is enough winter left to sow all I hope to grow.
Your Sprouts = My Inspiration to keep sowing.

This is giving me the fever! Finally the snow has melted to count my jugs and take a peek, thank goodness no sprouts, not ready for them, think they would die if they would come up now BUT------I have daffodils comming up around the house, yea--------spring is near!!!!!!!!!

Wow, I actually DO have sprouts. I noticed yesterday that my lettuce sprouted. Here we go!

    :)

Some random spring mix lettuce blend I found in a drawer when I moved into my house, packed for sale by 2004. Nothing else, but the peas I sowed have swelled up and seem to be doing something.

I'm quite a bit worried about nearly everything I planted to be honest. I think I used too heavy of a potting soil for seeds to germinate in. The newer jugs have potting mix instead.

    Advaya,

I used potting soil and I've got some sprouts of broccoli and lettuce. Think Trudi said she uses potting soil as well.

Thanks Caryl, that's wonderful to hear!

    *sigh* none... :(

But I've got a few crazy grape hyacinths blooming in the front yard... does that count? ;)

So far for me, I've just seen Rudbeckia Irish Eyes and Hollyhock.

No sprouts but a bit of "action" in the 10 poppie jugs! That process when the seed sends a root downwards before growing anything upwards (I've forgotten what it is called..)Sprouts can't be to far behind! Yipppie~

No sprouts yet, but while I was shoveling snow to make room for my winter sown containers I did find a blade of green crab grass. Does that count? ;)

    no sprouts here :(

I checked too but the voles may have messed up many of my containers so I hope they still sprout.

I seem to be planting later than usual this winter and it has been colder than usual, but so far I have:
Dill (Bouquet), Rudbeckia (Cappuchino), Geum (Lady Stratheden), Geranium (Bill Wallis), Chinese Houses, Spinach (Space Hybrid), Sweet William, and Candytuft.
I have 89 containers sowed so far and know I will make it up to 100 so not too many have sprouted yet, but about two-thirds of those containers were planted after Valentine's Day - so I should be seeing more sprouts soon.
Good luck to everyone. I love winter sowing!

Mesclun, arugula and one lonely lupine here!

As a newbie I am getting anxious that I might have done something wrong since I have no sprouts yet at all. I am in Ohio. We are just hitting 40 degress now, maybe 50 this week. In december I tried these seeds below. Should I be seeing sprouts or am I too early to even consider it? Maybe not freak-out until April. Thanks for any advice.

    Rose of Sharon white
    Penstemon Red Husker
    Penstemon Grandiflorus
    Rose of Sharon Red
    Penstemon Praire Dusk
    Verbascum MilkShake
    MockOrange
    Foxglove Pink
    Columbine Rose Barlow
    Joe Pye Weed
    Goldenrod
    Columbine Wild Red

I checked my jugs today, and behold, I have one little dianthus sprout! Aww, it's so cute! Now to keep an eye out to see if more of its little buddies will arrive into the world soon. I'll be doing the check-and-see from now until everything that should sprout, well, sprouts!

conniesc don't worry, I think for zone 5 it is ok not to have sprouts yet. I have none. Not even a root growing :)

If my perenials in the ground start greening up then I might be worried.

    Karen

thanks Karen for the hand holding... :)

Newbies: Absolutely NO worrying allowed about the absence of sprouts to date if you are in zone 7 or below !!! Your seeds are FINE. You didn't do ANYTHING wrong. We have only had a very little bit of warmth - - -they are getting ready and will come soon.

I always check my poppies first, as they have been first to germinate 3 years running...until I see sprouts in the poppy jugs, there is no point peering down all the jug spouts. I use poppy like a canary in the coal mine.

First sprout of the year!! Alyssum Carpet of Snow. Always one of the early birds.

Conniesc, do not worry about not having sprouts yet, certain seeds germinate early but most will come in a mounting wave of green when the temps get a little warmer. :)

    I have my first!

1 lonely cilantro (hope he has friends tomorrow) and a full container of Mesclun greens.

    Yipee!

Add Cerastium/Snow-in-Summer to my list. They sprouted in the past day or so! Appropriate considering that it has been 60 for the past couple of days and yet there is still snow on the ground.

Today I discovered my 1st sprouts - yeah!!! Dianthus 'Siberian Blues' & Dianthus 'Barbarini Purple'. Surprised they sprouted before the poppies and alyssum. Regardless though - I am doing the happy dance.

In the last week malva, cauliflower and some wildflowers from a mix of seeds have sprouted, joining the lettuce and broccoli that sprouted first. It also looks like some of my (too early) sown petunias are peeking through. I'll have to watch them in case they're calling for frost.

I've seen some on here have hollyhock and lupine sprouts. Mine are showing no signs of life and since I've never had success with hollyhock I'm starting to worry and thinking of sowing some more.

    Caryl

After reading about all the sprouts I just dashed out to look at the containers and there's a hollyhock sprout that wasn't there yesterday. Seems like some are coming up everyday now.

The green wave just keeps going! Yesterday when it was still nice out, my scouting report for my containers gave me a count of 43 containers out of 72 with sprouts. Dianthus, Silene, Armeria, Digitalis, Campanula all reporting in. Also poppies, pansies and a few mystery seed containers which I will have to identify when they get a little bigger. Now that it's supposed to rain for a few days, there may be an even better report next week. Go Green Wave!
