First of all rooting hormone is not traditional. We have found that it produces massive amounts of roots and takes forever to send up plantlets. Using the water method seems to produce only water roots and when the leaf is put into soil it has to start all over again.
I cut the leaf stem to about 1/2 inch on an angle with the cut end facing front. Put it into my light soil mix and bag or cover it in some kind of container. I put it on my light stand and check it weekly to make sure it hasn't dried out. If you are growing by natural light, just make sure the covered leaf does not receive direct sun or it will cook. It turns out that the hormone used is one that encourages roots but *suppresses* suckers! That's why you get masses of roots but no babies for a long time.

I have 99% success rooting leaves using Fred's technique. The trick is to have the mix *barely damp*; it takes suprisingly little water to root leaves if they're enclosed. If you get a lot of condensation inside the baggie, just open it until the condensation evaporates.
