Problem...Big Rose Small Pot

Dear Garden Folk

Simply speaking...I misunderstood the stats on a new rose (Red Cascade). I thought she was the hanging plant. 18" wide and would cascade a bit longer. Wrong. She grows about 24" tall and gets 5' wide. Problem is that she's in a pot and i have no room in my bed until fall.

A. Can I leave her in the pot and move her into the garden in the fall or

B. try to find a place to keep her until I can put her in my garden space.

Thanks!

Dale

Somehow your post dropped even when no one answered it yet.
So, i'm bringing it back up to the top.

Planting in your zone in the fall season may not be a good idea. But, since you already have the rose.
As far as I see it, you have 3 choices.

    1. Make some room in your garden and plant now.

    2. Plant the rose in the fall in your garden & winter protect it somehow from cold and winter winds. But, the root system may not be developed enough into your native soil to survive. Probably not very good odds? But, who knows?

    3. Plant it in a 5 gallon container or so and try to over-winter in a unheated garage, etc, etc. Then, plant it in the Spring time. (Not sure what size container you have it in right now?)

Best time to plant roses in your garden & zone is in the Spring.

Maybe someone else has some better ideas for you.

    Hi Jim

Thanks for your thoughts. Actually I have managed to plant in fall. A little bit of mulch and a lot of wishing.

As far as the Red Cascade goes...there is no room for me to put her in my very tiny garden

Any thoughts about how to oversummer her?

Do you think she will be able to stay in the basket or will she choke on her own roots?

How bigs the basket? Tall & wide? Your going to put it into the ground in September/October? right?
    Keep it well watered.

    Start over again.

How big is the rose now? How big is the pot? Presumably the rose is currently smaller than the pot, so this isn't a current problem but a future one. Since my Red Cascade didn't have a future, being considerably less sturdy than advertised, I'm not sure how worried I'd be.

Are you sure you still want this rose - 5 feet wide! I have a tiny garden too (7mx11m, including my greenhouse)and a short and wide rose just is not on. Upwards, everything goes up (or down) but does not really spread out( forced upwards in a mad scramble for daylight). But anyway, to keep it over summer, I would repot into a larger pot: 18-20inches diameter, deep as you can. Can you get loam based composts in the US? We can get a potting mix known as the John Innes mix which is essentially a good clean topsoil/loam mix with peat, sand and a fertiliser base. If you can use soil from the bed the rose will eventually occupy, maybe with a little perlite.....water but no extra fertilisers - you don't want it to grow too much green sappy foliage, can't really see a problem.
Still, if Mad Gallica's experience applies to your rose, you might be able to shoehorn it in anyway.

Not soundin to good. IÂm thinkin that the future of this rose is not a good one. I donÂt even have the room to repot her in a wider pot
I guess IÂll leave her where she is and let her live out her life as a sort of hanging plant
    Thanks folks

Some sites says that rose can actually grow to 6' - 8' wide.

thanks folks,,even if i can repot her like campanula thougt well...i really can't do that either.
i guess i'll just enjoy her as long as i can.
she has lovely dark red little flowers
    oh well...
