Half Violet, half cabbage!

I'm finally coming out of lurking mode. I've only been lurking for seceral years now!

I picked up a fairly pathetic little AV with a couple of sad blooms at a garden center near my house. I liked the blooms and their AV's had all been reduced to 99 cents. If it didn't make it, no biggie. Now that it has been cared for, it has become a monster. None of my others have this growth habit. It has turned into a head of cabbage! I repotted when I got it home and divided the bajillions of crowns and it STILL looks like cabbage.

Any thoughts?

One other question.

I sort of...ummm...borrowed a leaf from a mini that was almost dead at a certain home improvement center and wouldn't you know it, beginner's luck, I now have lots of little plantlets. One of them is growing from the top of the leaf where the leaf meets the stem. It has four leaves, but it is teeny tiny. What should I do with it?

If you are concerned about it looking normal, you could always strip off bottom rows of leaves and then do a "long neck" planting. I kind of like it when I have one that refuses to act normal though. Rebels!

As for your leave situation, I am also having that happen with a leaf of Kindergarten Kid. I sort of 'repotted' the leaf so that it was more laying down instead of standing up. I'm hoping the baby will root into the soil mix then.

Vegan, very cool violet; it's obviously very happy. Congrats. As for the reaching; it could be that it wants more light, but some plants just have an upright habit (it's not considered desireable, but it's your plant and if you like it, go with it).

As for your leaf, if the baby is happy, leave it. Let it get some more leaves and when it's big enough for you to feel comfortable about mangling it, cut or break it off and treat it like a sucker (i.e. pot and cover); it'll be rooted in a month or so.

    Good luck.

This one doesn't need more light. It just thinks it wants to be a BIG plant. I have two pots with this violet now and two of my friends have two pots and it still looks like this. Just didn't know that it would grow straight up. I've never had another violet do this.

As for the baby, it's way to tiny to do anything with now. I guess I will just take a wait and see approach.

Hey Vegan. It does look healthy and happy. I can't tell very well from this angle, but it looks like some of the back leaves are facing in the opposite direction. Does it have more than one crown? If so, that might be why the leaves are not laying down.

One way of "taming the cabbage" would be the following...

Remove all the old leaves by snapping them off(by pulling them to the side). Starting from the bottom progress your way to the top 3 rows of leaves...generally one row consists of about 3 leaves--so about 9 leaves will be left(plus a bunch of miniatures in the very middle of the crown).

Then cut the root ball in half(cutting off the bottom half of the roots), and repot--this will place new soil around that "long neck" that you have created. Very shortly afterwards your plant(with proper water and fertilizer) will have a good head start to having a good shape and form.

I'll admit--I still have some violets that look like yours--sometimes---I like having miniature AV bushes blooming. BUT I have noticed a huge difference in the blooming of the properly shaped plants--they bloom much better.

    Best of luck--keep us posted.
