I had a fairly large catfish (syonodis - the brown & white spotted one)and they seemed to get along but he's alone now. Do you really think 29 gal is small for him? I have another tank (55 gal) but there is a VERY large catfish that is very aggressive so maybe I could put the large cat in the 29 gal and the BG in the 55 gal but would the 29 be too small for the cat (alone)He's about 10 or 11 inches. Not sure what to do. It's an issue right now because I'm moving and need to move both tanks so if anything's changed, it needs to be now. Thanks

CLOWN LOACHES

Ghost knives are very peaceful as a rule, unlike most other knifefish. I've had them living peacefully with cardials and rummynoses. A 29 is okay if you're absolutely keeping up your water quality, but don't put many other fish in there. Maybe a trio of clown loaches, like bullheimer said, or a couple of smaller brightly-colored gouramis.
I've never trusted catfish- except for otocinclus, kryptopterus (glasscats) or little plecos- one day they just seem to grow up and go into a homicidal rage. Plecos grow up and start lumbering around and knocking things over accidentally, that's my main gripe with them.

I wouldn´t trust them with anything that´s not as nasty as they are, they love to suck the eyes of other fish from their sockets, clown loaches can defend themselves so they could be a good companion.

Thanks everybody - I was thinking of clown loaches too - I had them before but the B.G. was not so large then. I'm moving next week but the aquariums will be the last to go. Still unsure. Raul - eeuuu! Are you sure we're talking about the same fish? The Black Ghost fish, I mean. I've never heard of such a thing and now I wish I hadn't. My experience with them is that they are very peaceful but territorial- maybe a nip or two here are there. Darn.

Yep I've read about ghost knives liking eyeballs.

I couldn't quite figure out why clown loaches lol. Yeah those spines they pop out under their eyes. I keep forgetting about those as someone who like to hand catch fish you'd think I'd remember lol.

I´m pretty certain we´re talking about the same fish, just ask 6 of my "blind" cory cats and a pair of "blind" black tetras, they weren´t blind until I added the ghost to the tank, it´s specially annoying when your suddenly blind corys are those hard to find and expensive Corydoras panda. I knew they were territorial and having a couple is not a good idea but never knew they would attack other fish. Now I no longer have fish, tore down my fish room, but those events are hard to forget and if you can help somebody that is still in the "beginning" with your experencies I think that you should.

SWORD TAILS AND MOLLS WORK FINE ME

Black Ghosts prefer soft acidic water and I would recommend any amazon type fish and plants or any fish that like soft acidic water. Any of the tetras, coryadora cats, small cichlids (rams and apistos) maybe even an angel or two. As long as the Black Ghost is well fed he shouldn't become a predator and certainly won't get 16" in a 20 gal.

But a stunted fish is a fish with a shortened lifespan....

Thanks for all the remarks but I'm afraid I'm still a little confused about what to do. The aquariums will not have to be moved for a few weeks but time is running out. Isis - Are you saying a 29 gal is just too small for my B.G? Even is he's the only one in it? I also have a large cat (not sure the type - about a 8 or 10" long) in the 55 gal with two smaller cats. Could put him in the 29 gal (alone) and put the Black Ghost in the 55 gal with the two small cats - surely 55 gal is large enough - but is the 29 gal big enough for "Felix" the large cat? I'm sorry I'm confused but please help before I move them. I'd hate to give any of them away but ...what to do?

I added ONE ghost to a 100 gal tank and still it sucked out the eyes of my cory cats and it was very well fed like all my fish were.

I have a ghost in a 72 gal with tiger barbs, rosy barbs, neaons, swords, an angel fish, cory cats, pleco, flower shrimp, Buenos Airies tetras, rams, apistos, kuhli loaches, a glass fish, pristellas, serpae tetras,aquatic frogs and guppies. All live in harmony quite well. I have never had any trouble with my ghost. He has his own hiding place and I feed my fish flakes, frozen and the occasional zucchini.He is about 7" long now. My tank is heavily planted and has driftwood and many hiding spots too. I have read a lot on Black Ghost Knife fish and from what I can tell they are peaceful fish. I do know though they can get a taste for smaller fish if they get hungry enough. Good Luck!

I know I have too many fish but I am holding some for my daugheter's 10 gal tank and my other daughters 25 gal tank. In the mean time...lotsa water changes and a darn good filter!

Only if you're willing to buy it a bigger tank later (I assume baby here...). They need space to turn around and ideally that would make the short side of the last tank ~2' for a 20" fish. When you get into big guys it's not so much the actual gallonage as it is floor space.

I'm in the process of building an 8x4 indoor pond for my guys They're not gorwn up yet but I have two clown knives ~2-3' depending on source (12" right now), two marble gobies ~2' (about 5" right now), and three bichirs ~1'(about 5" now) the bichirs will be divided off but in the same tank otherwise they're lunch. I'm going to have to do some juggling until the gobies grow up enough to be with the clowns.

Schmoopi- Could you please post a picture of your 72 (75?) gallon tank? I would love to see it - sounds beautiful. I would love to have a 75 gal with lots of different species in it but still on the fence with where to put it (or my 29 or 55 gal) in my new house. The guy who's going to help me move my fish suggested one 75 gal instead of my 29 & 55. Said there would be plenty of room for my large cat and B.Ghost. I might have to remodel a closet in my breakfast room to accommodate my fish. Still don't know what to do.

I had a Black Ghost for years because I just loved how he looked. But he had to live by himself because he dismembered all of the fish that I put in with him. I'd find them missing half their tail or whole fins after only one night with him. He lived a solitary life.

I had a very large black ghost.. 9 " he/she lived in a 55 gal. community tank. I had guppies, upside down catfish, tetras, gouramis, a frog mouth chaka chaka, freshwater lion fish AND a 9 inch alligator gar. There was also a 12 inch plecostimus. None of them were in any wasy agressive. I made sure the Gar was well fed as h that fish was my major concern as far as agressiveness. My ghost was a beautiful docile creature that loved to be hand fed and would rub his nose up and down my finger

I know they need huge tank but I only have a 10 gallon and I've heard that some people don't have problems with keeping just 1 in a tank. Would it be alright.
