I used to have 2 Altum's in my 150gal tank. The problem I had is they would occassionaly bite each others eyes.

I used to keep/breed a lot of angels but I never had any luck with the altums. If they are wild caught (which is pretty much the only kind you will find) they are very, very sensitive and you pretty much have to treat them like discus (I raised a lot of discus too). Also they need larger tanks than the usual angels because they get a little bit larger and they are a bit more aggressive. I was able to get my hands on a few once but they were in pretty bad shape by the time they got to me and they didn't last too long. Good luck with the altums! I want to get my hands on some one day as well.

Thanks for the info. I'm bringing the lily pool in to my heated system so i will have a year around pool of 5x10 feet ,3 deep. Including the waterfall and Marsh area there will be around 1200 gallons. Want to try to breed the Clown loaches and thought this would be a great place for the Altum also. Have been unable to find a source though.

Sounds wonderful. Angles probably wont show well in a pond enviornment. I have an 130gal indoor pond with tropicals, scools of colorful fish show well. About 100 cardinals would look sharp. Post some pics when finished.

The main purpose for tying in the lily pool is for the heat to the shadehouse. Figured I'd have 1200 gallons of warm water so might as well use it for another purpose.
I keep red swordtails in the pool right now.
Want to move the Clown loaches to this pool it will be tied into the waterfall,marsh area and a 150 gallon aquarium which serves as a reservoir. Now that I'll be able to control the temps year around see no reason why I can't use any type of fish. Naturally it tends to get soft and acid over time so thought the altums would be ideal.

With that size pond you could probably breed almost any kind of fish. Maybe Syndonis Angelious [sp?] or some type of rare and expensive fish. Some rare cats or plecos could be a profitible business. I can't think of many really expensive freshwater fish. I think I paid between $10-20 for my altums many years ago. Good luck on your project.

In my search for Altums on the internet,noticed, that all types of angels have really went up since the last time I looked .
Even ordinary ones (if there is such a thing now lol) are 3 bucks or more. Certainly have bred them into a lot of color strains. 500 bucks for a pair of the KOI strain .??!!
Why has the price jumped so much?? Angels are not hard to breed nor raise.
Locally i find a lot of Angels of all kinds except "wild " types I don't particularly like the Veil types but the golds with normal fins are rather attractive.. gary

Years ago I kept some Altums and must say they are a fascinating fish.
Just keep nosing around and maybe you
can get a dealer to special order them. Don't think they
will show off their beauty in a pool/pond environment. I
wish someone would breed a Veil angel that was able to carry the veil erect as it matures.

Haven't kept any kind of angel for many years but figured I'd have an ideal setup
Keep mostly Marine for many years was soooo tempted to start a saltwater pond but doesn't fit in with other hobbies
and it would be a real bear to manage gary

I see them listed on Aquabid once in awhile. I have tried to keep them a few times without much success. I only know of one spawn ever in captivity, it was done by Jim Langhammer, and I'm not sure it it was at his home or at the BELLE ISLE AQUARIUM when he was there. Having worked for a couple of wholesale places I'll say this much, they do not seem to adapt to captivity well. I believe they come in loaded with parasites, and have seen very few do well. I can remember keeping and breeding wild discus and urau with less trouble, than trying to keep altum angels. I would love to have a large tank with a group of them a bunch of cardnal tetras, and maybe some checkerboard cichlids, but reality strikes. GOOD LUCK!
