Bettas and cool room temperature?

With the cost of natural gas predicted to rise a great deal this winter, my husband is already obsesssing about keeping the heat down at night when it gets cold. From internet websites I get information that water temp for bettas shouldn't fall below 68 degrees or so, but a friend has two bettas that do fine in winter when her heat is turned down to 62. Do you have any experience with how cool it can be for your betta to still be healthy and happy? Hubby thinks we should turn the heat down to 55 at night (we'll see about that!). The betta is in a 5 gallon tank, but I don't plan on getting a heater for the tank; I'd probably give the fish away instead.

Anything that you can tell me would be very appreciated!

Well the best thing would be to invest in as small heater. They are not that expensive. If you can't provide the conditions and care for your fish....the best thing to do is to give them to someone that can. I don't see the point in risking their health. I wouldn't keep my bettas in any less than 76F.

Well I understand where you are coming from. We usually keep our bettas at 70 degrees durning the winter. This winter my husband says it will be 68 degrees and if the bill gets too high I know it will turn into 65 degrees. My husband does not handle the cold well so we will see how long this lasts. As for a tank heater, I already run an indoor pond pump and a ten gallon tank filter so he sees it as more money out of his pocket electricity wise and has not wanted me to use one. Also I have heard that tank heaters sometimes malfunction cooking the fish to death. So I really do not like them anyway. I am going to try the cooler temperatures my fish have been really healthy so here is praying they stay that way. My husband is allowing 68 degrees. Some breeders lower the temperature a little to get the Bettas in a spawning mood for breeding. I read the lowest temperature for Thailand is 68 degrees.

No WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would leave my husband if he tried to set it at 55 degrees. I hate the cold. I also have a four year old son so that would be the last straw. I would not take anything less than 65 degrees. Our immune systems get sick when we are chilled. When we are chilled it weakens our immune system. So I could not live in a home that is too cold that it makes you sick. Once we visted with elderly friends for one week they kept the heat at 62 day and night. I never felt so cold. I got the flu that week and was pretty sick feeling chilly. But when you do not have the money what can you do. Either get a high bill that you can barely pay for and that if not paid the company threatens to shut you off, or cut the heat and have enough to live on. It is a sad part of life because I think heat and water are the most important things a human being can have next to food and a roof over your head.
