Delphenium sprouts

On some of the past threads on delpheniums some people asked to keep posted on how they progressed. I planted seeds Dec.22, milk jug fashion, and have some small sprouts as of yesterday. I guess it's a start. I'd like to hear from others that have sown delpheniums. Thanks, Luke

I think I have ONE sprout... I am anxiously waiting for the rest...

I planted Pacific Giant the first week in January from year-old seeds. On March 21 I got my first sprouts. Oooo! These are so pretty, and I'm very excited about growing them.

My delphinium weren't winter sown, but nurtured in a sunny window for an entire season a few years ago (before I found WS. Also didn't know about cold stratification, just stuck the seed in pots). This will be their third year in the garden and all four are up as of a week and a half ago, so sprouts right about now in your zone sounds right. Congrats. I'm sure they'll do great.

My choicest ones are sprouting! The expensive bi-colors, not sure about the Pagan Purples yet, think I saw one. I thought they needed some fresh air so opened them up, will keep in shade until I see if more are going to sprout, partially covered now.

Also have several meconopsis, never expected that!

I'm glad everything is open because I found some containers with just a bit of that whitish fuzz stuff that will get out of control, sprayed with my hydrogen peroxide solution, think I got on that soon enough.

I have winter-sowed Delphinium ajacis and some leftover 'Frosty skies' both of which are annual Delphinium (aka Larkspur). They are sprouting like crazy!

Last year I planted them out and they were promptly munched by slugs, so this year, I will take care to treat with Sluggo.

Congrats on your sprouts. I WS several different delphinium varieties in January and February but so far not a single sprout has poked up in any of the containers. I'm confident they will eventually sprout--so many other perennial seeds I WS are up--I just don't know how long it'll be until they do.

I admit I was leery and hestitant because I'd started the only other ones in spring which worked well but involved the intermediate step of transplanting singly. But this is so much easier, I didn't sow those too thickly, many have sprouted, some haven't, and those are planted so that they can grow on for quite awhile without planting in the garden so long as I keep them watered when they need it.

I actually felt I needed to water the delphs in front tonight, it's that dry, will try to do the ones in the back tomorrow am, not too many to do.

Also I might give those a little bloom booster time release by and by.

I have a few D. sprouts, tiny, coming up in a few different containers. I was excited to see that the couple of seedlings I got last year and planted in a 1/2 wine barrel are returning with gusto. I think they are conn. yankees.

Patience, patience, patience. I make myself look in my 8 jugs of wall to wall poppy sprouts (HOS in the garden this weekend, hopefully, and then NOT eaten by deer or slugs or bunnies)for strength. Everything in it's time. But I have never (going into my 4th season of WSing here)gotten huge germination on D., not like poppy.

One jug of larkspur is pretty fruitful with sprouts though... Waiting for first true leaves and if they have them by the weekend, they are getting planted to.

aliska, your delphiniums sound wonderful! If I don't kill mine this year after wintersowing I'd love to fill more garden space with them. Can you tell me specific varieties you recommend?

    Oooo! I'm becoming a gardener!

deanna, I accidentally flushed my post. I like Blue Bird and Blue Jay from Swallowtail and cheaper, but can't remember where they are out there. Say they don't need to be staked but not dwarfs. Liker the darker BB better from them.

The ones I've winter sowed are the above but my favs came from TM, put delphinium in the search window on top. 3-4 pages of results. The ones that are germinating the best right now are the Centurion Blue Lilac bicolor, look gorgeous in their photo. Also trying the Pagan Purples but may not like those as well now that it's done.

The most popular ones seem to be Pacific Giants and Connecticut Yankee. Looks like TM doesn't have those. They will have a sale coming up but don't know if the best seeds will on it. This year I'm having good luck so far with TM, especially Foxglove Candy Mountain and Shirley Poppies (like other poppies better). The shirleys came up almost the first from WS'ing. I keep going back to TM over the years because they have huge selections of seeds although pricier, some I've not had much luck with for one reason or another, often hold some over too long.

The ones I'd seen highly recommended somewhere here or there are Magic Fountains. They look gorgeous in the photo at TM and also google images. I also like that green twist one and the other colored ones, don't have room for too many and not much personal experience, first I tried was spring sowing last year, germination a little over 50% which is good for me on Blue Bird, had some Blue Jay but may have screwed that one up.

I don't know if anybody has tried, again from TM the Green Twist (white w/green eye) and the Magic Fountains I've seen highly recommended elsewhere, haven't tried them. The colors are beautiful.

These were expensive enough, but I love the New Zealand ones, the most expensive but didn't buy any, too inexperienced and not a whole lot of room for too many anyway. CT Yankee and Pacific giants I've seen a lot around here but haven't tried. Those others named in this thread I don't have a clue.

Maybe someone else with more experience will chime in. I go for what catches my eye at the time, forgot about Magic Fountains or I should have gotten some of those. Pacific I think needs staking, don't know a thing about CT Yankee.

Those are really pretty! Last year I wintersowed some and wasn't sure where I wanted them, now I would like to move them but I heard they don,t like to be transplanted. Anyone have any luck transplanting them?

    Those are beautiful!!!

Maybe I jumped the gun here. But just now I see more popping up. I think they are stretching for more sun, may have to give them some but want to wait and see what comes up the next couple days. Once they start, they go pretty fast.

The seedlings transplanted ok out of the trays into deep-cell packs, and I did have to carefully separate them out as singles, lost a few. Every step of the way, I would lose a few, including while they were growing on in the cell packs and over the winter.

those delphiniums are gorgeous! I didn't realize they got so big. I wintersowed a small container with pacific giant seeds, so far I have one small sprout.
