Maters are sprouting!

Trudi generously sent me seeds from about a zillion different varieties of tomatoes. I had six types sprouting yesterday! Woo hoo!

We're expecting freezing temps in a couple of days, so I'll need to cover the little guys. But I don't care--I'm officially declaring that tomato season has arrived.

Congrats. Mine aren't doing anything yet, but I'm almost hoping they don't come up till mid-April so I don't have to worry about frost as much. Although there's so little exposure in the milk jugs that I wonder if they'd be OK even with a light frost.

Congrats. Mine have been up for about 3 weeks now - Fuzzy peach tomato seeds that I got from Trudi from Wintersow.Org. I'm excited about eating those tomatos this year.

Sounds great! And pretty much on schedule for Zone 7b. You mkay need to toss an old blanket over the flats if you drop below 30, but usually WS tom seedlings can weather a light freeze well.

    What's sprouting for you KT?

JDB, Fuzzy Peach is a real heirloom oddball. It makes mostly 2" to 2.5" soft yellow globes that ripen with a rosy blush. They're peculiar in that the skin really does have a bit of peach-fuzz on the outside. Your first bite is a little nervous because peach fuzz is not a sensation you expect when biting into a tomato, but once you get beyond that it's got great flavor. It's quite good fresh, but OMG! It makes awesome sauce!!! Yellow tomato sauce is a real treat.

I started mine indoors at the end of February. Lost them all to damp and cool night temperatures when I left them outside. Ooops.

So I wintersowed 24 containers last week. I noticed they were starting to crack today. I should see green tomorrow. It's only 73 degrees here.

I discovered 2 prouts yesterday! I don't know what kind they are because they were in a pack of Tomato Blend from Trudi. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Very cool. Tomatoes from seeds...who'da thunk?

    Marion
    Golden new dwarf champ
    Sibirskiy skorospelyi
    Green zebra
    Cherokee chocolate
    Oxheart
    Black krim
    Arkansas traveler

Thanks so much for making my day!

Green Zebra is a fantastic tomato. I grew it last year and have plans for many more this year. Also doing Marion and Black Krim from Trudi.

    Congrats to all!

    Erika,

The Blend is interesting--in the truest sense of the word. It's something tht you'll enjoy tending and watching for ripeness, best flavor, best vigor and disease resistance. Save seeds from the best of the best tomatoes and you'll have selections you can rely on each year in your own garden.

Token, Black Krim is one of my all time faves for flavor!

No sign of mater sprouts yet.... they have only been out for maybe three weeks, but the warmer weather lately, I am hoping to see them sprouting very soon.... about half of what I winter sowed has sprouted ..... how long do you guys wait for sprouts before you give up on a jug?

Trudi - I've got at least a dozen early girl toms that have sprouted, but still waiting on the black cherry. Gosh, this WS method works really good! Thank you for all you do....

I just WSed mine a few days ago- a few each of Snow White (my favorite tomato), Matina, Aussie, and Beefsteak. I did them in big cups (Fran's method) in a sterilite bin. I just hope our spring/early summer weather is more conducive than last year for heat lovers like tomatoes.

If anyone needs tomatoes please use the link below--I mail a LOT faster than catalogues, and besides that, they sell seeds and WinterSown gives them away ;-)

Here is a link that might be useful: Your Choice Tomato SASE, about 150 selections

I've got seedlings. And they're not at all leggy like the ones I started earlier indoors. It may mean I don't have fresh maters in mid June, but that's okay. The beds aren't ready yet anyway.

This is Rutgers. There are 23 other varieties either with just roots or tiny leaves like these. Next week, the temps will be in the 70s. I can't wait.
