Susan, Yep they flower before the leaf and I've got several that are flowering now.....not worth it as this flower is completely unimpressive in my opinion. As to water and fertilizer.....not much to say really....they are easy....just water when dry and fertilize a few times this summer to increase tuber size. You should have planted them very deep as they tend to want to flop over as they are not that sturdy. Have fun with them :o) Dan
Hi, there, Dan, and thanks for the response. No, I didn't plant them very deep. So far, the leaves are small, but then, the tubers were small when I got them, and they were already potted up, so I planted them at the same level as they were in the pot (small 4" pot as I recall). Should I dig them up and plant them deeper?
Hi Susan, If they are growing I would leave them alone to be honest. I have planted large tubers 8 inches deep or more and they flop over in full sun....I found that the 'Indian Giant' form hates full sun by the way.....I had a 5" diameter tuber that produced a 2 foot tall plant in full sun and a 3" diameter tuber that produced a 4 foot tall plant in shade. The regular form seems to love full sun in my hands at least. I'm sure it will go deeper on its own over time if you simply leave it in the ground. Have fun with it :o) Dan
