They grow in water, but it needs to be oxygenated. What they don't like is stagnating water in soil devoid of air. The soil shoud be fast draining so that overwatering can't happen. Sounds like yours could do with changing. I have one growing on the edge of a pond in the water. And we all know what fish do in water, and the PL is loving it.

I grow them mostly in pots but outdoors the best of these are in standing water, have never grown them in the house in florida except in riparium setups. Have even grown them submerged for long periods of time
Only things i've found that they will not tolerate is drying out and hard freeze. They seem to have a lot of trouble on the houseplant forum and insist they need sharp drainage . I haven't found that to be true . in fact almost opposite !! Keep an eye out for rot . I find them to be extremely hardy plants good luck gary

I think Peace Lilly is the easiest plant to over-water, so don't beat yourself too much for it, it's just how they are. In case of accidental over-watering of any plant, you could either poke small shafts in the soil all the way to the bottom of the pot carefully, it will help soil to dry quckly; or If it's way too bad - pull your plant out of the pot carefully and put damping cloth around soil ball, so that it absorbs excess water.
