azakeas or rhodos for zone 5?

I have a shrub border with two spots that get dappled to part shade. I would like to consider an azalea or rhodo for the spot but i am not one to baby things along. Can someone suggest plantings for zone 5 that would not require winter protection? If it isn't a good idea, I will scrap it and find a different place to try them. Thanks
