Amorphophallus availability

I was wondering if anyone would want to share any information about Amorph. sellers including people who might be willing to sell a few species from their private collections.

I am always looking for new and different species.

Does anyone have a favorite commercial grower that they have bought good plants / tubers from?

Well, I do not sell anymore, or I would recommend myself. Seriously, check out Enid's sales on ebay (Natural Selections Exotics). Also, Alan Galloway does a distribution many years in the fall via the aroid-l so you should make sure you are a member of that. You can get quite a few from the sellers in Thailand via ebay nowadays...most not that unusual. I know of no commercial web-based seller that has anything I would call unusual....by definition if they are commercially available they are not that uncommon. Alan is the only guy I know that sells truly rare species (many collected originally by him)....first come first serve....all the good ones will be gone within an hour of his post so pay close attention assuming he is doing a distribution this fall :o) Dan

African-plants has been selling an undescribed species from Madagascar on eBay for a month or two now but I don't know how long they'll keep it up - Amorphophallus is not their usual line. Also, the tubers have been sort of pricey.

    Thanks Dan and ogecko.

I know of Alan's yearly distribution and hope to reply early enough this year to get a few different species.

I was fortunate enough to get one of those tubers from Out of Africa, and I agree they are pricey.

One of my hopes was that there are people that frequent this forum that have a few odd species they wish to sell.

    Howdy ya'll
aracealover, you might take a look at Plant Delights http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/page8.html
they list 33 species or cultivars. I've bought from Tony before; he has good stuff for us whacked out plant collectors.

Just a word of caution. Deal with a reputable dealer. On the International Aroid Society discussion group Aroid l (L)there has been a great deal of discussion about sellers on eBay offering rare Amorphophallus species that are bogus. Once you grow the plant all you've bought is a common Amorphophallus konjac. Those can be found for just a few dollars! Sometimes bidders run the "so called" rare plants up to very high prices.

You can receive expert advice on where to buy via the IAS discussion group Aroid l. Some of the world's top Amorphallus botanists freely answer questions. You do not need to join the society to use the forum but I would certainly recommend you you consider doing so.

I agree with the advice to use a reputable dealer. However, posted as it was one could read an implication into it that eBay's african-plants (Out of Africa) is *not* reputable. While I'm sure that this was unintentional, I feel compelled to state that IMHO african-plants is extremely reputable, I have nothing but my highest praise for them!!! Specifically, I purchased one of their "Amorphophallus new species from Northern Madgascar", it has bloomed for me, and the expert(s) on Aroid-L have declared it an unidentified species.

By the way, I have no special relationship with african-plants except that I buy (and enjoy) their plants! :-)

    HEllo,
On ebay there are some Right now . A. Nightstick and A. Leo Song.
    Bigoldmerc Is a GOOD SELLER.

Thanks Konjacking, I will have to check them out.

I purchased a Leo Song from this seller about a month ago but was outbid for the Nightstick.

    These are some interesting varieties.

I agree Bigoldmerc is a good seller.

He did a wonderful job in packaging the tuber, it even arrived with the leaf still attached so I could see for myself the color of the stem.

    John,
    Did you get a Nightstick?

I was outbid on that one Konjacking.

I think the best way to buy a Titan Arum and make sure it is a Titan Arum is to buy the seeds because no other Aroid has bigger seeds.

If someone can, we are looking for amorphophyllus seed for a classroom in Toledo District Belize. Titanum or some of the larger varieties would be nice. All of these children live in a rain forest, but most will never be able to leave Belize, we thought to raise awareness of rain forests in general, amorphophyllus and nepenthes would be visual aids. This is a mobility challenged group.
