See other response to thread - it's a konjac. You know, this is the most commonly grown Amorph around, but I still think it's one of, if not "the", prettiest, blooming amorphs.

Hi Susan,

Plop it in some potting soil or leave it sitting out if it is atleast an inch in diameter and it will be fine. Yes, these are lovely....not so much in bloom necessarily, but the leaf is massive and it is beautiful sitting on the front porch in a big ol' pot....people think they are palm trees when they are massive. When you see a nice pink sprout starting to come up and some little baby root nubs forming at the base of this then pot it up and give it a touch of water to encourage the roots to grow.....do not water much at all until it is above the soil line if you are growing it in a pot. If you have it in the ground then wait until next spring and plant it once the soil warms up and forget about it....I found out this year they can take pretty sever drought conditions in the ground in the shade as we had very little rain and I could not be bothered watering the ones in the ground more than once every 7-10 days and they were fine when I dug them up this fall. I don't have it in the ground yet, Dan, because I thought it was probably too late to plant it out, no? I think I will stick it in a pot with perlite/sand or peat, and water it ever so neglectfully, and wait til spring to plant it out. Does that sound good?

Okay, I measured it - it is an oblong or oval shaped tuber. The short part is 5" in diameter, and the elongated part is 7". Fits pretty good in the palm of my hand. Bigger than I thought.

Susan, Just put it on a shelf and forget it!!! That is easily large enough to flower.....it must be 3-5 pounds at that size....you've obviously got a nice friend. Do NOT water at all.....not at all....you can easily rot these if you water now.....just let it sit on a shelf and forget it....one this size does not need to be in potting mix or anything. It should likely flower next Marchish and then put up a petiole and leaf in June....do not plant it out until it gets nice and toasty warm and you see the obvious signs of growth. Okay, I think I'm confusing everyone and myself, too. That is the circumference of the tuber, not the diameter. It doesn't weigh near 3-5 pounds, more like maybe 4 oz., so I doubt it is close to flowering size. Yet, it is a nice little tuber, bigger than I would probably get if I purchased one in a 2" pot.
