Montauk Daisy

I have Montauk Daisies that are about 5-6 years old that I split last year. I moved part next to the house and left the rest where it was. I cut down both very low so they would regrow and fill in . Well... both groups filled in then lost the leaves in the middle much more so than I've noticed in the past. The group near the house filled in well in the front, but the part closest to the house got nice leaves on top and several inches down, there were almost no leaves and it looked terrible. The others did the same only not as noticably. Should I move them further away from the house so all sides get more sun? They just look so ratty and they seem to grow like weeds so I don't think it will be too much of a problem, but I just hope that's all it is. Any help is appreciated.

I am interested if anybody is growing these successfully in zone 4. I have just bought one and it looks terrific in the pot and I am about to plant it in full sun, not against anything. I was told by the nursery to cut it back in early summer or it would get our of hand large. Do others do this?

    thanks

Mine were just reaching peak bloom when a hard freeze zapped them last night. They bloom very late--not sure if you'd get much in zone 4.

I agree w/ laceyvail, they bloom very late--although the foliage is nice. I think it would grow better in fuller sun. When did you split it-- maybe it's going through adjustment and next season it will grow better?

I read somewhere you are supposed to cut them down in December and then again in June. No matter what I do - follow the rules or whatever, they always seem to split. Carrie

I have mine right next to the house (southwest location) and it does great. It can flop because the house holds up one side and a big hosta holds up the other. The flowers appear in October and I like them far better than Shasta daisies. They're bold! BTW, I never cut mine back, except when they're done blooming.

Mine look like hell ! I must not cut them down correctly, or at the right times. BTW, I was out in MONTAUK last weekend, and naturally there were alot of Montauk Daisys out there. They all look beautiful and full, not like mine with the long bare branches and flowers at the end.

I cut mine back with hedge sheers right around the fourth of July. The cuttings often root themselves. They are looking beautiful and compact right now!

Mine are blooming now and look great considering the ugly spot in back. LOL. I love that they are blooming now. It adds so much to the front of the house, when everything is just about gone, except store bought mums. HA I'm in zone 5, and I cut them in the fall when they are done blooming and that's usually it. I split it last year, but the other's that were not moved or split, still look kind of ragged too. Too_many_pets, I got mine from Montauk, actually, and originally planted them at my mother's. They were from an older couple that used to spend a week in Sept. at Gurney's every year and they loved that the daisies bloomed then. They said they bloomed just for them. Talk about romantic. :) They are gone now but their son owns the house down in Long Island where the plant is, and it looks incredible too, and their's is planted near the house. I don't think it's fair....Mine is from the same plant, how can it look so bad? LOL. I think it's got to be the soil or something. I'll try cutting them mid-season next year and see what happens. That might be the trick, though. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I just posted on the Name that Plant forum, seeking an ID for this perennial that someone suggested was Nipponanthemum nipponicum or Montauk Daisy. I did a google search and think they are right.

Does this look like Montauk daisy to you? Mine aren't doing that well in the spot they're in, I think they like full sun and moist conditions, and I just don't have that in this yard.

I have a couple of blooms that have come out in October.

That's a Montauk. Mine are on the west side of the house and get maximum sun and a soaker hose. I get lots of blooms.

I just found these daisies in my local grocery store. I live in Orlando, Zone 9b-10. Do you think they would grow in my heat and humidity?? I have tried Becky daisies for two straight years with no luck, the plants rot, and I have never had a bloom. I am able to do silver Princess in spring. I googled and it does say to zone 10, but is that a wet, humid 10? Please let me know how yours like it when you get a wet streak.
    Thanks, Pat

    Debstuart1 -

I'm probably a bit warmer than you, but my Montauk daisy plants are in a relatively exposed, windy location on top of a hill (in front of the Canterbury, NH, public school.) They do indeed get huge - I'm thinking about moving them because they are shading out some rhodies. I had no idea when I planted them how large they would get. In this area they are rock hardy - they have been exposed to weather down to -22 or a bit lower and not been bothered at all.

I took a small piece of mine from my front yard and planted it in the back . The new plant is 3 xs the size of the "mother" plant. I guess the conditions in the back are more favorable. Funny, when you ask about Montauk Daisy here, the garden centers look at you funny. They call them Nippon Daisy here!

My Daisy is huge now...May 29, can I cut it back so it doesn't grow up and over my sidewalk??
