railings and steps

how do you achieve that dark glossy, luster finish on the railing and steps? do you use stain or paint? what color stain and what color paint? how many coats applied?

    3 coats. Stain on railings would be finished with minwax oil based polyurethane in semi gloss. Floors are finished with Absco in satin. Floors are white quartersawn oak, stained 50 percent Jocobean and 50 percent Ebony mix. Same on railings- if too light make them a little more ebony mixed in.

    I love the stain color on the railing but would not like to go as dark with the floor since there is a walnut border that I would like to show. Will it look right with darker railing and lighter stain on the floor?
