Updating cabinets

We are going to sell our 1978 home and the out dated kitchen is a concern. We don't want to spend much and my question is when is it ok to paint over stained oak cabinets (in view of the possibility that the new owner may prefer the grain of solid oak)?

If they are original 1978 I'm sure a coat of paint will do them good. Photos would help.

Chances are that whoever buys your house will want to remodel the kitchen no matter what you do. You may have to accept that an outdated kitchen in a 70's house means that you have a lower asking price for the house, This is especially true if the rest of the house is also dated. Surfaces from the 70's - flooring, counters, cabinetry, is not only dated, they are also worn out and that is more of a problem than being dated.
