It's cooler today

It's temporarily cooled off into the high 80s so today I braved the back weed patch--formerly known as the back garden.

After a few hours it looks so much better. I can actually see that Souvenir de Pierre Notting is putting on some new growth after sitting there for a year or so. Is Souv. de PN one of those teas that take forever to get going and once they do, you finally love them?

Maggie looks wonderful now that the weeds have been pulled from beneath her feet, she's got great looking foliage and some tiny buds.

On a more positive note, I love Souvenir de Francois Gaulain. The color is amazing and although it's new, its had a lot of blooms for being so young. I wish it had more fragrance but I'll take what I can get.

Speaking of great fragrance, the mini, Seattle Scentsation, has really impressed me. (I know this is the antique rose forums but I can't help including this little bloom machine).

Thanks for letting me gush about a few of the highlights from my weed patch turned garden. Jeff

Here, too, even down to the upper 70's. What a relief!

Yes!! It's only around 72 degrees this morning! I planted all my reblooming iris, 1 tomato, one blue angel's trumpet and one jasmine, weeded, dead-headed and trimmed off dead bits. YYYYYYYYAAAAAY!
I'm tired though, will have to leave the spuria iris for another day.

A couple of my potted roses wilted just a tad from the recent heat, but overall, I'm pretty happy with how my roses are doing in the heat. La Reine, my beloved, is blooming again. :)

Jeff, I know what you mean about things cooling down. It gave me a chance to clean the sticker patch, aka the side garden. The roses look so much better.

    Come on fall!!!!

Yes, thank God. I'm got a blog addressing the cooler weather tomorrow (Sunday) on my blog.

Jeff, I agree with you about Souvenir de Francois de Gaulain. I can't understand why this rose isn't more widely available as it's so beautiful.

Here we went from 105.4 degrees a few days ago to 78 today and the cooler weather is heavenly. Of course the hot days have taken their toll on the roses and everything else but watering every night seemed to help. September can often be the hottest month here and after that it's the fire season so interesting times may still be ahead.

Well, it was somewhat cooler here, too, probably due to overcast and last night's deluge. I got three new babies planted (Climbing Pinkie, Duquesa and another SdlM) and fed my big pots on the front circle. Also got all my flats cleaned for seeds. I was contrary in planting peachy Duquesa next to Hermosa, but I figured salmony Mme Abel Chatenay is just across the way, so it'll be OK, I think.

I made an exciting purchase at Lowe's today. The pop-up greenhouse that I saw on their website yesterday for $216 was $89 in the store, so I bought one. 6-1/2x5x5 with 2 zippered doors plus screen doors. DH and I have been talking about building one with PVC pipe. This is easier and probably not much more expensive. Pretty cool. Also, the garden manager convinced me to take a bunch of plants off his clearance rack. Ten 4" marigolds for 15 cents. A big coreopsis and a gaura for 50 cents each or a quarter (I forget). He was feeling bad for the poor plants that no one wanted. Very nice man.

I have Souv de Francois G, and I like him real well, too. Jeff, my Souv de Pierre Notting is a little over a year in the ground, still pretty tiny (not yet 2x2) but progressing and blooming. I really like his flowers. They've been light apricot/peach and perfect gems on the small side. I'm definitely going to like him.

I enjoyed the cooler day - glad you did, too.

I too have a former garden/current weed patch. I'm always appalled when I come back from several weeks in Florida and take a survey, but it cleans up faster than a person would expect. This year there's the slump to deal with, though, hugely infested with Bermuda grass. I'm going to plant shrubs and let them subdue it. Our temperatures also dropped last night and I hope that bugs and the itching that my allergic reaction to their bites brings will ease off in the cooler weather. Fall's on the way!!!!

Yes, it was so nice yesterday that I spent hours in the yard. I havent' been able to do that all summer.

melissa, bermuda grass is the devil. It is the worst weed in my yard. I have found that growing huge junipers over it will eventually kill the grass underneath :)

My S. Pierre Notting is a slow grower also. It's been 2 years and most of the teas I planted are about 2 feet. Mrs. BR Cant and Comtessa du Cayla are larger, but I think that is because they get more sun on average.

Cooler here too. What a difference a day makes!
