Question about containers for roses

I have ordered four polyanthas from ARE, and they're due to arrive mid-September.

I bought:

Mrs. R.M. Finch

Mevrouw Nathalie Nypels

Marie Pavie'

Excellenz von Schubert

I need to grow these in containers rather than plant them in the ground. ARE indicates 16-20" pots are sufficient; I have one 19" pot which is 17" high with rounded sides, and can pick up some half-whiskey barrels. These are 25" across the top and 17" tall.

As these are my first container roses, and indeed my first roses, period, I would like to ask you more experienced growers whether or not these sizes seem roomy enough to allow the roses to grow for a few years?

Also, the person I spoke with at ARE indicated that plain ol' potting soil like Miracle Grow would be fine - do you all feel this is the way to go, or do you prefer a specialized mixture?

Redwillow, a 25" pot is nowhere NEAR sufficient for Excellenz von Schubert.
In Southern California, (You are in Solvang, I am in Ventura County) Excellenz von Schubert grows as a lusty climber. I have seen it used to cover a very large arch. I use it on a wide-set tripod, made with 8-ft-tall poles:

As for the others, a 25-in pot is probably sufficient for Marie Pavie and Mrs. R.M. Finch for a few years. Eventually, they will run out of space, however, and require either potting up or root pruning. If you are able to plant them in the ground, that would be preferable.

Excellenz von Schubert has good disease-resistance in Southern California. It is very sensitive to pH, however. In my alkaline conditions, I must use soil sulphur around this rose, periodically.
Marie Pavie should be a trooper for you. Don't prune her hard. She does not take well to that treatment.
Mrs. R.M. Finch mildewed uncontrollably here near the Ventura County coast, and is No Longer With Us.

    Hi Jeri,
What a gorgeous rose! Thank you for sharing that beautiful photo! I had no idea that Excellenz von Schubert was such a vigorous climber. ARE describes it as appropriate for container growing, and says it reaches 3-5 feet. However, the woman I spoke with on the phone did admit that folks in California report that their roses grow to double the size of ARE's Texas estimates. TX is a pretty brutal climate.

As I am renting this house I would prefer to keep the roses in containers, but I suppose I could plant one into the ground. I even know the perfect spot for it. I'll enjoy it at least for a while! Sorry to hear about the demise of Mrs. R.M. Finch. As I am up over the coastal range, I wonder if conditions here would suit her better.
Pruning! There's something else I'll have to learn how to do. Like I said I am new to roses and have much to learn! Thanks again for your helpful info - I appreciate it.

Marie Pavie will be happy in that size container for quite a while. Eventually, of course, she will become too large, but that will be after you have received a lot of enjoyment. To me, her best trait is her fragrance. Don't worry about her, but I don't know much about the others. In my opinion, Miracle Grow's potting soil is just fine.

Miracle Gro potting soil's actually pretty good stuff. And SOMETIMES you can buy it tres cheap at Costco.

You know, since you're going to have to move, why not start EvS off in a container, and see how long you can keep it there?

And yes. Up where you are in the Santa Ynez Valley -- heck, that's rose heaven, I think.
You may be able to grow Mrs. Finch clean. My DH loved that rose, and hated to give it up.

If you ever need advice specific to your area, I know an Old-Rose-oriented Consulting Rosarian who lives in Santa Ynez.

    Hi Randy,
I really can't wait to receive Marie Pavie' - everything I've read about her is so positive. Can't wait to experience first hand her scent. There's nothing like a fragranced garden!
Thank you too for the thumb's up on Miracle Grow potting soil. I'll have my pots and soil ready for the delivery of the roses!

    Hi Jeri,
You can bet that I'll be watching at my local Costco for Miracle Gro! A lot of things sold there are just too big for me, but in this case, the bigger the better!
Good to know that there's an old-rose oriented consulting rosarian right down the road. I'll remember this and may ask for his or her contact info. You may hear me hollering for help in a few months!
