How lovely! They are one of my very favorite birds. I saw one outside my window earlier today and just stood and watched it for a long while.

I was sitting on my patio, wearing a red gown, when a hummer flew up close. I recognixed his "kiss, kiss' sound ( to me, anyway ;-) behind me & didn't move, just waiting to see what he would do. He must have thought I was a big red flower & was trying to figure out where to get my nector. LOL. He finally gave up & zipped away.

What a nice thing to share! We have more hummingbirds at the feeders this year than ever, possibly because it has been so hot and dry here that their natural food sources are scarce. I also have one of the little bulb flower feeders-the hummers will come to it when I hold it in my hand. Jenny

That is one thing I noticed this summer is that birds and butterflies (snakes too, unfortunately) would come up closer than they would when I could move around fast. They must have known I couldn't catch them. I was petting huge moths, and these bluebirds nested six feet away from me for a week until my cat chased them off.
I think this is a little known benefit to being disabled.

I love hummers and all of nature for that matter. We feed from 3 tubes and have about 25 to 35 regulars. A couple of the wee ladies love my cascade in the herb garden and will swim and play for awhile every afternoon. I have gotten to within 3 feet of them and watched for minutes at a time.

I used to work at a home for mentally disabled and one of our residents there would sit out in the middle of the garden area and the deer, birds, squirrels and other animals would come right up to him. The deer would even eat grass from under his bench while he laid there. I never understood it because he was VERY violent with ppl. Guess they saw something that the rest of us couldn't.
