I've never tried it but I saw bare root tomatos growing upside down with baseball sized tomatos on them at Disney World. They were supported on a wire and had drip irrigation with nutrients disolved in the water.

There was a guy just south of here that had a large greenhouse and I bought some of his tomatoes a few years ago that were raised the way you saw those at Disney World. They did not have much taste to me. But they were full of liquid. I won't get any of those again.
