What a cute picture! I've never heard of beavers damaging anything -- except trees. There must be a beaver pond or a stream near your yard. If they're building or maintaining a dam in the area, they'll gnaw around the base of small trees till they (the trees) fall, then drag them off to use in their dam or hutch. They eat the bark and will sink small limbs in the pond to eat during the winter. I've also read that they eat vegetation growing in the water, like water lilies and water cress. They won't destroy your yard by digging for grubs and worms like the wretched armadillos do.

Beaver??? that looks like a ground hog..beaver has a LOOOng flat tail and the face is different..google both....he has a short furry tail..the only time you should see beavers on the move is late spring/summer when mom kicks them out of the den to find a new home..Oh and ground hog WILL eat your garden..in the midwest..farm land.. they shoot them...they are like a very large rat....cute but man they love to eat YOUR suff....LOL LOL

I wondered if that really was a beaver,too, but couldn't see the tail very well. I agree that it's probably a groundhog, but I've never encountered them, so know only what I read about them.

In some parts of the country groundhogs are called "land-beavers".

I call 'em big rats.

Speaking of beavers, they come into the lake at UAHuntsville frequently and have done thousands of dollars of damage to trees in that location. They are trapped on a regular basis, or there wouldn't be ANY trees on campus!

I seen a show on PBS..I think ..years ago, that they ''suck''them up in a big truck that looks like a septic tank cleaner full of hay..they suck them up and sell them overseas as pets....I think this goes as one mans nuisance is another mans best friend...LOL LOL LOL
