I'm in Alabama zone eight, and have grown regular hollyhocks with success. However, they don't last as long here as in the north. The heat seems to get to them, but they are great while they last.
I also have grown French Hollyhocks which are a perennial here. They grow about four feet high, and do well in the garden or in a pot. I planted some seed for winter sowing, but they germinated in our early winter. I potted them and they are growing in my shop. In fact, one is about a foot tall and it is blooming.

When I was a kid 5 decades ago, Mother grew hollyhocks from seeds. We lived in a suburb just north of Birmingham. We had reds, pinks, whites and wine-purple that I remember. The biggest 2 problems were they had to be staked and those tiny worms would strip the green material from inside the leaf structure. By late summer you have pretty blooms without leaves. Now we have systemic insecticides which will control the worms without having to spray. They grew for years and we gave seeds to everyone. I guess they were killed when the deck was expanded across the length of back of the house. I bought some seeds and I'm going to plant some this year.

It will be interesting to see how mine do.

I've got a bunch along the fence in my backyard. This will be their 4th year and they still seem to be going strong. They didn't bloom the first season, but that's normal if you start them from seeds (which is what I did). But maybe since yours are actual bareroot plants they will. Let us all know how they do.

I grow hollyhocks. I got my first plant at Petals from the Past a few years ago. They are sort of like mint, once they get started.

I would like to visit Petals from the Past sometime. I wish they had an online catalog and took orders. I got mine planted Friday and they got a nice rain early Sunday morning. They should be settled in real good.
