What have you tried? I used to do them in pots but had trouble keeping them consistently moist. Now I just stick the cuttings in the ground where I want them. If they get too dry, they won't take. Do you know which kind you have?

I've tried putting them in water and water then pots. I'm not sure what kind it is. It was given to me by an elderly lady. She told me if I would come dig it out of her yard I could have it.

You want a piece that is woody, 8-10" is a good size. Strip all of the foliage from the lower half, and most of the foliage from the top, especially the larger leaves and any flower buds. Bury the lower end at least halfway. If you make the cut at a severe angle, there will be more surface area of exposed inner layer, allowing for easier uptake of water, especially in the critical first few days. When I trim for cuttings, I carry a jar or bucket of water to put them in until I get to the spot where I'm going to "plant" them. If it's in full sun, setting a lawn chair over it for a few days for temporary shade can help. Water well and often until it starts growing.

I think the problem I am having is because I was trying to use the new, green growth. I thought it would root better. I will try your suggestion.

I have a small "greenhouse" in my kitchen. It's an area on my counter dedicated to rooting plants, and I have UVA/UVB lights I use under the counters. Most of my plants do really well there.
