It is the time of year - i have them too. They live in the dirt - or at least i remember finding some in the dirt while planting, maybe last year. Have no clue what they are though.

I think I'm having the same bug. They're very attracted to light and will beat themselves near to death on the side of the house. One night last week I made the mistake of leaving the outside light on and the back deck was almost covered with the little things. Blech.

Sounds like one of the chafer beetles, a common spring time visitor. Grubs can be a pest of lawns.

Oooo are those the things that divebomb your head at night when the porch light is on?? They give me the heebies and the jeebies with their buzzing wings! UGH!

That's the ones. Thanks for the photo. They are definitely obnoxious. I picked one up to look at it more closely and was going to photograph it and the dang thing moved slightly! Eeecchh!! Spiders don't bother me and most snakes either, but these creepy things do give me the heebie jeebies too. Thanks for the ID. Besides the grubs that might damage the lawn, what does one do about these critters? I haven't seen any new ones. I'm secretly hoping the hail storm wiped 'em out.

Ignore them. They won't be around that long. Turn off porch lights if they annoy you. There isn't anything you can do, reasonably, anyway. They won't hurt you.
