Plant as deeply as needed to hold it firmly in the ground. It isn't going to hurt to plant a little deeper than it was before digging. Use some good old gummy, Alabama red clay mixed with good soil to help to help hold it. They will grow in almost any soil. Keep it well watered this year since it is so late in the season.

Thanks for the tip Terry - I dug some up from a friend's yard and was rather worried myself. I platned one in the ground and put the others in BIG pots with lots of dirt - cuz i haven't decided where to put them yet. THey are in DEEP shade in the pots - i figured safer that way - think that will give me any problems?
