help with hollyhocks

I have tried planting HH from seed for the past 3 years. They grow fine to about a foot tall & then always die. The one I planted last spring grew better & lived thru the winter, but died about 2 weeks go. :( Can anyone give me any tips? What type soil is best, part or full sun, best time to plant? I thought maybe they just don't do well here, but my Mom said her neighbor grows them all along her house. thanks for any help!

Tell us about the soil and where they are planted. Are they ... in the sun? ... in a low, damp area? ... high and dry? It has been my experience hollyhocks like well drain soil but never bone dry with lots of sun.

they get sun just about all day--from about 11 AM on. My dirt is clay, but I dug a hole of course & mixed in potting soil, but maybe there isn't enough drainage there. Should I mix in a little sand maybe? thanks!
