Black mulberry will make a large,beautiful shade tree and bird tree. The berries are much like blackberries in looks and taste. The only problem is they make a big mess when they drop. If you plant one, put it near the edge of your property, away from you house. The berries seem to act like a laxative for the birds. If planted near your house or driveway, the birds will poop all over the house and car and make such a mess. The berries will drop on your car and stain it. The berries make good jelly and pie.

40 years ago when I was at Ft. Benning, GA, we were sent to training division HQ to clean the yards. We were all very young men and like all young men, we had an insatiable appetite. We never had enough food or time to eat during basic training. Well, they had a mulberry tree growing out front of HQ. I began picking berries and eating them. I ate a bunch of berries before my Yankee friends new what was going on. That Fall, I ate persimmons on a compass range. Being a Southern boy who stalked through the woods all my life definitely had advantages.

I have a Mulberry I brought from my parents place in Nebraska. They are very slow growing. Mine has bore fruit for a few years now.
The best part is picking and eating them right there instead of getting on the tractor and mowing!!!! :O)

I live in zone 7 in Mississippi. Near the Tupelo area. Both mulberries and jujubes live here. Mulberries grow wild but I have one called old black english that has been here for years. I also have jujube trees. I know of some that are in my area that are real old. See no reason you could not have both of them. Larry

When I was a kid (along time ago.Lol) we had a large mulberry tree with low growing limbs that I could climb easily and I would sit on the limbs and stuff on the berries. One year a mocking bird built her nest in a rose bush under the overhanging limbs. I unintentionally killed all her chicks by feeding them mulberries. Didn't know they were srictly insect eaters.
