Just about any of the vines that climb by means of their own adhesive attachments will/can damage the mortar. It is never recommended that you allow such plants to climb directly on your home. Virginia Creeper is one of those plants, sorry.

Besides, Va Creeper is deciduous and won't stay green all year like ivy does.

Hi Kenzie, First, loved your photos. The fence corner especially...I thought that if I were driving by I'd want to find a knothole to peek through to see the rest of the garden...LOL Thanks for giving us inside views ..a tropical gem.

Wanted to suggest some alternatives vines and attachments. I've used dabs of clear silicone sealant (caulk) to attach clear fishing line to wall and grow Lygopodium japonicum (Japanese Climbing Fern) and (new this year) Manettia inflata (Firecracker Vine) and Jasmine 'Fiona Sunrise'. These are lacy lightweight vines which don't overwhelm or cover completely...just make a nice tracery. Lots of other small vines could be used...just thought of another: Asparagus plumosa (aka A. setaceus) known as Plume Asparagus Vine which might be evergreen there. All these are root hardy here and already 6-8 feet tall.

You could also attach sections of trellis to your wall and grow heavier vines like Clematis or Roses...or even annual vines like Dolichos lablab (Hyacinth Bean).

Trachelospermum asiaticum variegatum is a favorite of mine for heavier coverage on a trellis...it has white/green glossy leaves that have burgundy touches in winter. Few small white blossoms but sweet scented.

None of these would harm your mortar. You might want to ask over on the Vines forum for many more suggestions if these don't appeal.

If you do use the caulk, be sure it says for outdoor use ..it's meant for sealing around windows/doors and is weatherproof. You can dab it on in grid pattern, press your fishingline into dabs and let it dry. Good luck...josh

Thanks ya'll. I was afraid of that. Feel like the trellis and fishing line ideas are likely the best. I do have a lot of 30 and 60 pound monofil line I can experiment with as well.
