new orders

Has anyone ordered anything fun for next year yet? I ordered Bull's eye from Rosemania. I'm thinking about one more. Maybe koko loco or ketchup n mustard.

Go for Koko Loco, it's beautiful!

I haven't ordered anything. I''ll have to wait until spring and see what does or doesn't make it in the new bed before I can add any new ones. But I'll probably go for mostly minis/minifloras when I do.

another chiming in for CocoLoco. It's Awesome! I am mostly ordering to fill in spots left by last winters awful weather that left many of my older declining roses dead. SO, not so much awesome as getting the right colors back. But speaking of Awesome, my favorites from last year were Anne Henderson, SOuth Africa and Waterlily, all from Palatine.

I'm really happy with Koko Loco, but I'm only basing that on one season of growth. I can't wait to see what she does next year after!

I really badly would like to have The Imposter or one of the new hybrid hulthemias like Eyeconic Lemonade, but it appears they are more suited for hot & dry climates and that does not describe a typical summer at my house.

I'm still pondering ordering more, but so far I've ordered:
    Ann Henderson
    Martina Mondadori/Carole Bouquet
    Rainbow Niagara/Tropical Sunset
    Osiria
    Sunstruck
    Kleopatra

I'm most likely going to order Remember Me, but I don't know yet from which supplier. Osiria I ordered because I adore the color combination of Love, but I didn't realize that its petals reflex like they do. I would like another rose that has the fuller, fatter blooms without reflexed petals. Kleopatra I ordered because I really like the look of Ketchup & Mustard, but can't stand to see that name on a garden tag. (You can all berate me for that if you wish...lol.)

I've been drooling over the stipes on Tropical Sunset and the veining on Sunstruck for about 6 months now and they were simply "must-haves".

I'm still on the fence about ordering Sweetness, and I think I'd like to get another hot pink like Stephens' Big Purple, Parole, or Duftrausch 86 since our Electron has such a slow repeat...but wow is she spectacular when she DOES bloom!

I saw Ketchup & Mustard as a demo plant at Roger's Gardens last weekend, and was thoroughly impressed -- that one's definitely on my "to get" list for next spring. Plant and foliage and bloom were all great. The ONLY bad thing about that one is the %*&!% name. But that's marketing for you -- it's memorable. And I did order a couple of newbies from S&W Greenhouse -- Bull's Eye and Twilight Zone.

And Flaurabunda, I've been growing Eyeconic Lemonade for this whole season -- got it early last spring -- and I'm highly impressed with it also. Go for it. Of the hot pinks you mention (and I grow them all), Duftrausch is the one to get. That should be a better known rose than it is. But plant it and stand back -- it's vigorous.

I have ordered six roses and have a few questions!! Too late..HA! From Palatine, I have Broceliande, Poseidon and Red Intuition coming. I now wonder if my zone 6 garden in Louisville, KY. might be too cold. Does anyone grow these in this zone? I could put in pots as I do with other zone sensitive roses. They overwinder in my garage and do well. Off course, I would prefer to plant in ground. From S & W, I have Bulls Eye, KoKo Loco and Heart of Gold coming. I guess I will have to put Heart of Gold in a pot :-( , but I love the pictures of this rose, so I have to try it! If anyone has info on hardiness of any of the above, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks...Lesley

Lesley, I know that there are a few people that grow Red Intuition in my area and just north of me. I've thought about getting it myself, but I opted instead for the greater color contrast of the yellow & orange one.

I've got Munstead Wood, Red Intuition, St. Patrick, and Chicago Peace coming next year. No room for ANYTHING else! Except that Bull's Eye seems to be speaking to me... lol.

Ketchup & Mustard looks pretty as a flower, but I don't know how the color scheme would work in my garden. I can't wait to see pictures of it though! I'm very interested in seeing how the older flowers fade.

Okay, you talked me into it. I ordered Koko Loco and while I was at it I HAD to order Smoke Rings and Coffee Bean. I can always find a little spot for a mini or two or three.

lol...I placed too many orders already! Some of the ones I'm most excited about are:

    Ascot
    Acropolis
    Red Riding Hood
    Mint Julep
    Intermezzo
    Bull's Eye
    Lime Sublime
    Ketchup & Mustard
    Vavoom
Austin's Chiani, Cymbaline, Munstead Wood & Country Living
    Imperatrice Farah
    Music Box
    Waltz Time

I was spring were coming sooner! :)

Where did you find Mint Julep? Didn't know she was still out there for sale anywhere.

I found her at Vintage Gardens. I was set up on their "notify me when this plant is available" feature, so they sent me an email she was available a couple of months ago, and I just delayed shipping :)

Although, I just looked at the site, and it looks like they're out of her again...another reason why I'm going to miss that place...

Lesmc, I've had Red Intuition for 3 years now and it winters beautifully. I was a little afraid for it the first winter because it is a florist rose. They're usually greenhouse bred and grown so they're not known for hardiness. But RI has been very vigorous and winter hardy for me so you should be fine.

    Hey, Kathy---
I remember last year that you were the one that told me about the benefits of Duftrausch, so I kept it on my wish list!

    Tammy, who's selling Imperatrice Farah?

Floribunda, I originally found Imperatrice Farah at Palatine last year, and fell in love with her, but they were out of it by the time I went to order! This fall they aren't offering it unfortunetly, so I wasn't able to get it from them this year either. She was on my "must have" list, and unfortently the only place I was able to find her was at Hortico....so I'm taking the chance with them, and hoping for the best :( K&M roses in Mississippi offers it also (and they seem to have a great reputation), but unfortently they graft onto Fortuniana...so I'm a little leary of it in my zone...

Here's my list for this year, I ordered all of these from Vintage about a month ago, thirteen arrived and have been potted already and the other seven are being rooted for me. There are a few more that I want to get and have to watch for.

    Daybreak
    Thisbe
    Lemon Spice
    Phil Edinger's Noisette
    Mme. Zazu
    Archduc Charles
    Quatre Saisons Blanc Mousseaux
    Cramoisi Superieur
    Lamarque
    Crepuscule
    Le Pactole
    Souvenir de la Malmaison Climbing
    Grandmother's Hat
White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth
    Mme. Berkeley
    Niles Cochet
    Boule de Neige
    Mrs. Woods' Lavender-Pink Noisette
    Paul Neyron
    Alexander Hill Gray

Now I just have to choose a spot, plan and prepare a new rose garden. :o) The fun is just beginning!

Yep. I'm not confident enough in my skils to venture outside my comfort zone (or my yard's comfort zone), but I do love perusing the offerings at K&M. Heard nothing but great stuff about them also.

I saw the same thing--sold out last year at Palatine, my vendor of choice, and not on their list this year.

    I've placed my Palatine order:
    Ascot
    Lion's Fairy Tale
    Poseidon

I'll probably place a David Austin order too.

I have Tinenke, Lynette and Flaming Beauty coming from Palatine
Our Society gets roses from a jobber in Missouri. I have Gold Medal,Secret,Hannah Gordon,Distant Drums,Falstaff,Charles Darwin,Fair Bianca, Sugar Moon and Ketchup and Mustard
I already bought three Renegades from Rosemania and they are planted.

    Dan,
Renegade hated the heat & blooms wouldn't last a day. I'd leave for work in the morning to a partially open bloom & come home to blown flowers.

This week, with the very cool temps, it is absolutely stunning. It has a candelabra that's about to pop and I cannot wait to see it, if we don't freeze first. Wondering if it requires some afternoon shade to keep it's color and form in our brutal summers. I put some pics up of it on HMF about a week ago or so.

....and I just put in an order from Vintage Gardens for these 4 :)

    Aperitif
    Nimbus
    Double Plum
    Jactan

    Very exciting!

From K&M next spring I will be ordering; 2 Stadt den Helder, 2 Lady Of the Dawn, 2 Charlotte Ann, 2 First Kiss, 2 Belindas' Dream, 1 Louisville Lady. 1 Flawless. From Edmunds; 2 Hannah Gordon, 2 Distant Drums, 1 Gold Medal, 1 Love & Peace, 1 Smart & Sassy. Now next summer I'll be ordering 4 bush's every month from K&M to finish out my garden. HOPEFULLY this is the what it will be. May; 2 Randy Scott, 2 Elina. June; 2 Sister Ruby, 2 Top Gun. July; 2 Here's Gert, 2 Desperado. Aug.; 2 Stainless Steel, 2 Veterans' Honor. If everything goes correctly (????), that should max out the garden.

Wow -- Mint Julep on its own roots -- that's dicey. If you can find something in your own garden to graft a few buds to as soon as you get it, I would -- for insurance. Any other happily growing rose somewhere else on your property will do. I like weird colors, and I've had many plants of MJ over the years -- they do "grow backwards" in my experience when on their own roots. The one I have now I got from QVC, believe it or not, they used to call it Emerald something or other. That one is on Dr. Huey roots (Cottage Farms is QVC supplier) and it grows just okay. But you are going to need to baby that rose.

I have an Imperatrice Farah from Hortico, and it took a few years, but now its a nice plant. Started out as a one cane wonder, but it has come into its own now and I do like those colors. Blooms could be bigger, but I guess you can't have everyting.

And yep, I have been a Duftrausch fan for lots of years -- so no surpise to hear that, Flaurabunda.

Today's favorite rose is Glenda Marie, I got it on Ebay. It wants to GROW! And the sprays are great -- better I think than its sport parent Nicole/Hannah Gordon, and THAT's saying something. Get it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Video -- How to bud roses

Thanks for the tip on Mint Julep Kathy. I know as a general rule HTs grow better grafted, but it was soo tempting I had to try it! I haven't tried to bud yet, but I guess the sooner the better (thanks for the video link)! I actually ended up with a Dr Huey by accident last year when I transplanted my Christian Dior who was grafted onto DH. Apparently I didn't get all the roots, and he started to grow up through the Yew bush that took Christian's place...so now the Yew is gone, and Dr Huey resides there:) So I guess I'll put him to good use! lol

I just love the oddities too, and Imperatrice Farah fit the bill..I'll just remember to be patient with her!

Peachymomo and Ken...I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who went ordering crazy! Makes me feel a little better to know there's others like me!

Got my Heirloom and Pickering orders made tonight (while watching the hometown Cards win the world series!)

    Aloha hawaii (Kordes)
    Louise Clements
    Lady of the Mist (heirloom)
    Frederic Mistral (heirloom)
    Rose des Rescht (pickering)(DA)
    Star of the Nile (heirloom)
    Wise Portia (pickering-sold out)(heirloom)

    Jacques Cartier/Marchesa Boccella (pickering)(DA)
    Lady Jane Grey (heirloom)
    Pretty Jessica (pickering)(Heirloom)

I'd still like to get Liv Tyler/Comtesse de Provence and Lady of Shalott but could only find them available where I'd be getting a single plant and it would be $40 for one rose after shipping....maybe next year, or maybe I'll break down and add them anyway...

I've already ordered (and just received) Quietness and Don Juan from Chamblees. So they are planted. Eager to see what they do this spring. I'm holding off ordering anything more until spring for 2, well 3 reasons. I am trying to support our local quality nurseries. I've been talking to them, and they've had a rough go trying to order, due to the choas going on with growers lately. J&P of course is out of commission for the moment. Weeks, who knows. The nurseries will have roses; they just don't know which of the varieties they ordered will actually arrive. I want to browse theirs in February first. Then I might go ahead and order mailorder. 2nd reason is money. My budget is sad currently; will be a little better come January. 3rd reason is there is a slight chance my wife may get a professor gig she's looking at that would require us to move in August--all the way to Juneau, Alaska!! That would be an adventure, but I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. I like our growing season here much better. But hey! Believe it or not, Juneau's in zone 7. No too bad considering how far north it is. Gotta love that marine effect air. My hope is that her current university will offer her fulltime work soon. If that happens, we won't even consider moving.

Here's what I "probably" will add in the spring.
    Peace (again)
    Buxom Beauty/aka Parole
either Veteran's Honor or possibly Pride of England
    Love and Peace

I've also been eying Osiana, Tropical Sunset,Sugar Moon, Dolly Parton, St. Patrick, and Santa Fe. I don't know where I would put these, though. : )

"where I'd be getting a single plant and it would be $40 for one rose after shipping"

Yeah, I hate that. I try not to order anything unless I'm ordering several roses at one time. I almost ordered from Vintage yesterday, but one rose would have been $50 after shipping. Blah, better to wait till I have a bigger itch that needs scratching. :)

Hmm . . . 'Koko Loco' in a zone 9 garden? Please come back, pelicanheard, and let us know how that one fares in your garden, okay?

I have Koko Loco. It has never stopped blooming, not even when the temp was a miserable 109 this August. It just finished a huge flush about three weeks ago and is loading up with buds again already. During the heat, the flowers faded pretty quickly, but now that it's cooler they're larger and last forever. I am SO impressed!

After Vintage Gardens announced that they are closing their nursery in 2013 I recently ordered from them, because I did not want to wait until the roses that I really wanted badly for along time are sold out. The bands have arrived already last week, very well packed and in good condition. Here is what I got:

Charles de Gaulle, originally I wanted Intermezzo, but that one was sold out already :-(
    Auckland Metro
    Alexander Hill Gray
    Chandos Beauty
    Snowbird
    Sir Henry Segrave
    Halloween
    Burnaby

Can't wait until the roses gain more maturity. I am so excited to see them flowering in my garden!

    So far I've ordered:

    Pickering:
    Viking Queen
    Hansa
    Hermosa
    Ville de Bruxelles
    Charles de Mills
    Henri Martin

    David Austin:
    Princess Alexandra (own root)
    Munstead Woods (own root)

Will also be placing an order with Heirloom shortly:
    Baronne Prevost
    Pretty Jessica
    Wise Portia
    Distant Thunder
    ...and possibly Morden Snowbeauty

I told my husband I was only adding a few next spring. Almost doubling what you've already got is only a 'few,' right?

So far, Red Intuition, Magnificia, Randy Scott, Snuffy, and Joy.

Zaphod...I had to laugh when I read your last line: "I told my husband I was only adding a few next spring...."

You sound exactly like me! I actually planned my shipments for when I know he will be out of town...is that bad? I think I've ordered about 40 for spring already...now I just have to figure out how to make them BLEND into the exhisting garden...hehe :)

    1) Have them delivered to work instead of home address.
    2) Buy him a golf pass for the day you intend to plant.
    3) If he doesn't golf, tell him his mother-in-law is coming over to spend the day.
    4) Explain that Palatine is the name of the company from where you ordered Christmas presents this year.
    5) Convince him that the new shrubs are new basal breaks from roses that HE must have tended to really, really well last year.
