Trailing Carnation~Value Seed

I HATE the simple packages with only the common name and nothing else! It took me a minute to remember where I even purchased these seeds from!

Did anyone order the Carnation Trailing 3180.....700531/5?

I know it's a Dianthus and supposed to be an annual but can't remember if it was hardy or tender? I'm thinking hardy annual though. I went back to the website but didn't find it there again.

Been looking around for the latin name and came up with D. caryophyllus. Would that be right? I thought D. caryophyllus were like florist carnations?

Thanks

    Hi Vera,

I bought a couple of packets of these from T&M for full price last fall, so I got the whole packet, with sowing instructions, etc. You're right it is D. caryophyllus, but my packet says it is a hardy perennial. It's supposed to be mixed colors (red and pink, the packet says), but the picture on the packet is of a bright red florist-type carnation. I wonder what zones it's perennial to.

    Anyway, I hope that helps.

    Thanks seedmamma....

They say hardy to zone 7, but looking at some more sites they are said hardy to zone 6. I bought them thinking these were annuals so now my question is can they be grown as an annual/ bloom first year?

I think they will probably flower the first year. On looking closer, I found it says on the packet that it is a hardy perennial (often used as a half hardy annual), ideal for bedding and borders, sow February to April, flowers midsummer to autumn.

I wouldn't count on it being good for either beds or borders...trailing carnations are usually used in containers and windowboxes because they flop, BIG TIME! Real pretty in windowboxes, and I think Park's had a photo one year of them growing in windowboxes on a house in The Netherlands...it was very charming!

Whenever you buy seeds from Valueseeds.com, always look up what you get in the TM catalogue. You will usually find them in there selling at full price. Also, the Valueseeds website will give full descriptions and directions.

I also purchased these from valueseeds, and have some sprouts now. They've survived several freezes, so they must be fairly hardy, although on the link seedmama gave, it says hardy to zone 7 and up.

Here's the valueseeds link to them, if you didn't find it yet.

I don't know how you found that Mo_girl...I looked thru all 5 pages of flowers and they were not there!! Twice!

Carmen, I did read this this very page mo_girl linked me too then, but at the time my printer took a you-know-what LOL!

I have the perfect windowbox to plant in and I think I will plant the carnation with the False Lobelia (Monopsis debilis) or Floss Flower (Ageratum) and Sweet Alyssum.
I got this Monopsis 'Regal Purple' from Value Seed too, but have you all seen the seed for this? OMG it's like smaller than really fine black pepper...dust really. I sowed them yesterday, but I don't have a clue how the seed came out or how it landed...for all I know they could all have landed in one spot! I couldn't even see as I scraped it off the sides with my fingernail over the container. Not much there, but than I can't count dust particles LOL!

    Hi Vera,

The Value Seeds packs are very limited in their information (that's part of why their such a good value), but to know more all you need do is just type the name and number into a search engine and you'll bring up the variety on the T&M website--you'll see the plant number as part of the URL.

Can someone tell me if I need to clip off dead blossums of the trailing carnation. I have one in a hanging planter.
    Thank you
