I thought we were supposed to toss the lids to begin with?

I haven't had any lids on mine since the beginning. How do they get water with no openings?

You toss the small circle lid on the milk/water jugs to create a small air/water/snow hole soon as you plant the seeds. With other seeded "lidded" containers, the lids stay on till its warmer and you poke some holes in the tops to let rain/snow in.

When do you take the whole top half off the jug or the whole lid off the container? When it seems "right" for your plants -warm enough consistantly, no risk of frost. Thats going to depend on your zone/conditions and the particular needs of the particular plants in that container. You will "feel" your way through this first season, like I did last year and like everyone does - looking up stuff (oh good, poppies can go out early..")asking questions here ("anyone else planting zinnias in the ground in zone 7 yet?") etc. Try not to be too nervous and have fun with it!

The word "lid" can be very confusing for a newbie....I think when talking about taking the top half of the jug off, we should not call them lids, but instead find some other word to call them. I know I was confused about that last year, and it seems like there is always a post called "lids, or no lids?"

OOOPs. When I said lid I meant the top half of the milk jug. Sorry. Jenny.
