A good source of free mulch for large areas are tree trimming and removal companies....
Freshly chipped wood makes a fine mulch for ornamental beds. You need to keep it well away from the base of plants as it may heat up initialy if there were a lot of leafy branches chipped up with the woody parts. The heating will be short lived if you spread it out thinly (2 to 3").
If you have the space to stockpile it it will break down in a year or three and be a good continuing source of browns for your compost pile."

By all means. I've been using wood chips for years and they're great. I have heard that they may use up nitrogen from the ground as they decompose, but if you suspect the plants aren't getting enough there are good natural nitrogen supplements you can add. I've never found that necessary, though. Do keep them away from the foundation of the house and be sure you get them from a reputable tree cutter who won't bring any that are diseased or bug-infested. He may bring it free or for a nominal fee if he's working in your area since it saves him a trip to the landfill and a tipping fee. Use pine chips for areas where you want them to last for 2-3 years (paths, etc.) or hardwoods in beds where you want them to compost more quickly. When the chips in the paths break down into compost, scrape it into the beds to enrich the soil, then put fresh chips in the paths.
