Morning glories need a bit of heat to germinate. Don't worry. They reseed heavily for me, so they should be fine. Just put them in direct sun if you can and they should sprout. I wouldn't do that just yet though. I've still not sown my most tender annuals. It's going to be 34 tonight here.

I sowed several kinds of pansies/violas; none are up yet. I think as long as they haven't germinated, they're safe from frost even if the tops blow off, temporarily at least. After all, what we sow, here at least, there are multiple freeze/thaw cycles and still germinate when they're ready if they're going to.

I can't speak to the moisture level. Too much for too long, they may rot; too dry when it gets warmer they won't sprout I doubt.

I'm, concerned about my pansies and violas though as that's what I invested the most in except the fancy delphs and meconopsis.

I agree with Aliska, as long as they have not sprouted, I think the containers will withstand a lot.

However, I would not sow morning glories yet.
They will germinate quickly and it is way too soon to put them out.
I learned to wait til June to sow my vines which generally like warmer weather.

Does that mean the morning glories are not going to make it?

I sowed violas in Dec, and one jug has just barely started to germinate. Many of my other seeds are germinating very well, so I'm waiting impatiently on my other viola jugs, too. All my jugs are in a nice sunny spot and warm up very well in the day. My main enemy is moisture as I used too little soil, so I have to water quite often to keep the jugs moist inside. My first year to do this, so my opinion should be taken lightly!

@ellenr: when you say that you wait until June to sow your morning glories, I wonder, do you use a wintersowing technique, or sow directly? It doesn't seem like it would make sense to sow something outside in a container when temperatures can get as high as they do in full spring/summer. And is it even technically wintersowing at that point? I see people saying they wont start certain seeds until near-summer quite a bit, and I've been wondering in general if this is wintersowing, or if it really means that people don't recommend wintersowing these particular plants in general.

FWIW, I always sowed my morning glories directly. They didn't seem to like to be transplanted. If you have some left, you may want to hold some back for that.
