The advice part might be a bit difficult, since the timing of specific gardening activities is somewhat (or very) regional (climate related). But if you want a useful gardening journal, be sure to get a multi-year one, so that annual comparisons are right at hand.

Rayama, I don't have a favorite book but I have a couple of suggestions. (1) Each Saturday morning the Bham News publishes a SPACES section which is the home and garden section. There is always interesting info there plus Larry Quick, the local county cooperative agricultural extension agent writes a column every few weeks. This is usually about plants within the current season. (2) Every month Southern Living has a gardening section with Q&A edited by Steve Bender and featured plant articless, usually by season. These are great for clipping. If you want to see old Southern Living copies, go your local thrift store to buy old copies cheap. (3) The new CLIPPINGS option on this (Gardenweb) website is great. You can send yourself an email containing a specific thread. Create an email folder to save the emails and print them as a backup to put in a 3 ring binder. Set up the 3 ring binder and use the newspaper and magazine clippings to paste onto the pages like a scrapbook. Also, anything you run across that is informative, cut and paste (real scissors and paste) into you notebook. Save plant tabs which come with new plants for later reference. I have a green binder (appropriately, enough) which I use.

I ordered one as well, and it is PERFECT! As well as a page for each day of the year, it also has a 'year at a glance' section with a column for each month, and a row for each year.
