My eucomis is a comosa variety with darker leaves and rose colored flowers. I've grown it in my zone 7 garden for years with no special care and it even survived the colder weather last winter. I would think the autumnalis would do fine in zone 8, especially if you mulch it well.

Catbird, did you bring one of your eucomis comosa to the Al. swap? I didn't know what I had until you posted above. I have had one for a couple of years, love it. I guess I will try my autumnalis outside. Thanks.

Yes, plantman. I have brought them to plant swaps. I don't remember who I gave them to, but that could be how you got yours.

Alice, I got one from you and I planted it outside about two years ago. It is doing very well and I now have several offshoots. I love the deep burgundy foliage. The flowers are beautiful too, but mine tend to flop and need staking. Do I need to plant it deeper or in more sunlight?

I thought I would let y'all know where the Eucomis came from. I have a friend who lives in Bethlehem, PA who grows a bunch of them. He sent me a bunch of tubers and seeds, which I grew and placed in the Etowah County Master Gardeners Sale. He grows some of his outdoors year round, most he digs up and places in his garage over the winter. I think he is in zone 6 - he gets a lot more snow but not THAT much worse cold.
