I love this tree! There are a couple of drawbacks, though. Here in Huntsville, the Japanese Beetles seem to like them quite a bit, which makes them look pretty ratty for a long time. Also, the issue with the roots is a real one. In a well-drained soil, they typically do NOT form those very natural 'knees' that these plants are famous for. I've seen them planted in parking lots, landscaping beds with nary a sign of those knees.

BUT, if your soil does not drain well, is over irrigated, collects rain water....then chances are you'll hate the day you ever planted it.

Your best bet, too, is to plant it within a large mulched area.
