Recommended garlic type for Florida?

What sort of garlic would be good for planting in Florida?

It's too late to plant for this season, but this gives me plenty of time to find sources for the coming Fall.

I waited too late last year to mail order so ended up planting grocery store garlic. I achieved nearly 100% germination and for the first month or so they grew well, but gradually it all petered out and died. The shallots, Vidalia onions, and elephant garlic I planted have all thrived so I suspect the garlic simply wasn't adapted to Florida conditions.

If possible I'd like to plant something that will keep over the summer once it's been harvested and cured.

A quick search turned up these three links to Florida and Garlic. Looks like you will have to be very careful in the varities you plant. Elephant Garlic appears to be #one. However it really is a leek that tastes like mild garlic.

There are several strains or selections of garlic being grown, some of which are `Creole,' `Italian,' `Tahiti,' `California Late,' and `California Early.' Creole is particularly suggested for trials in southern states. `Italian' is a purple variety with cloves protruding in a cluster at the stem base.

Looks like Creole garlic is the place to start. Anyone have a good source they'd care to recommend?

I too am a transplant from up north & miss my fresh garlic. I can find places to buy Creole garlic but don't want a full pound of seed garlic. Anyone know sellers of smaller quantities?
