Planting Grocery Store Shallots

I had several shallots from the grocery store sprout so I planted them in the garden. Does anyone know if these will go to seed or produce more shallots? I have been told that mature onion bulbs that sprout will go to seed but garlic does not. Could someone please offer some insight about this?

Mature onions will go to seed. Shallots, however, will produce more shallots, that's the most common way to increase your supply of shallots. Garlic will also go to seed unless you cut the scapes.
