Almost looks like Allium tuberosum, Chinese garlic. You might google that and compare.

Thanks for the reply Hortster. You might be right on the Allium Tuberosum. I googled them and they look very similar to what i have. You can see the flowers coming up in the background of the pictures. Once I see what color they will bloom I should have a better idea. Does anyone else have a different idea of what these are?

Chinese garlic does not have bulbs (white and about the size of a marble as described by you). It does, however, has flat leaves. From your photos, they appear to be Chinese garlic but the flower stem doesn't look like. You need a higher resolution photo.

The bulbs occur along a rhizome (so says Hortus III, so the bulbs do exist). The outer layer on A. tuberosum bulbs is "fibrous-netted."

As I posted last, Chinese garlic chive does not have bulbs.
Either you mis-read Hortus III or what he says is wrong.
It's simple to prove. Just go and dig up a chinese garlic chive to see yourself.

If the plants are already showing flower buds, they are definitely not A. tuberosum, which blooms in late summer. What suspense! Could be a flat-leaf chive, in which case you will get pink/purple balls, or A. moly (golden garlic), also an early bloomer with yellow flower clusters.

Now I'm curious about what the ebay seller said they were...

I agree that your allium is not Chinese chives, Allium tuberosum. The leaves are far too wide and it would not be sending up flower buds now.

Also, Allium tuberosum does NOT form bulbs in the traditional sense of the word. This species is rhizomatous and will only form slightly thickened stem bases at best, which are covered with a fibrous net. If the original poster planted marble-sized bulbs, then that also rules out regular culinary chives.

My suspicions are that you may have planted one of the spring-blooming ornamental species. Most alliums are edible but some are much better for eating than others, and some are much better for ornamental use.

Thanks for all the replies. I did more research and went to a nursery to see some Allium tuberosum in person and they are not what I already have. I also dug up my old ebay auction and the seller described them as "white multipliers" but the pictures in his auction don't match what I am growing so I don't think that is what he sent me. Are there such thing as flat leaved onions?
