Plant them now! There really is no wrong time up here as frost is not an issue. Even if they don't have time to make topset bulbils, they will continue to grow right up to frost and then survive all winter. If you have plenty, you certainly will be able to harvest scallions within a month.

I agree with Martin, Marquisa. You need to get them in the ground so they don't dry up.

If nothing else, you will get small, set-like bulbs which you'll be able to replant in the fall for a full crop next year. But, frankly, I'd be willing to bet that they'll produce for you.

Your farmer friend is correct. The red ones are very rare. Hopefully you will be able to grow a crop of them and share with others.

I'm looking to get some "Heritage Topsetters" to grow and compare with my Catawissa's. Does anyone know of any good sources? I understand that I probably won't be able to make a good comparison until next year but I have space available and would like to get them started.

The catalogs I've looked at won't ship until Fall.
