I store onion seed in the fridge, year to year, and it seems to help.

Officially, onion seed only remains viable for one year---which means only 50% can be counted on to germinate the second year, and it drops rapidly from there.

Keep in mind, though, that seeds don't read gardening books. I have a friend who kept a bunch of onion seed for more than ten years, through several moves, with no particular attention paid to storage. Mostly they were in a desk drawer. When she planted them, finally, she had a bumber crop.

When do you gather the onion seeds and how do you separate them from the Blossom. I assume that you store the seeds in a bag in the crisper in the fridge? I am going to try this as I have some that have been blooming for a week or two. I set them out in late fall. They seem to do better here if set out in late fall. Is it the same in Kentucky?
