Dig one up so you can see what it's looking like. I don't know much about planting in the spring as it's usually planted in the fall. Harvest time is when there is 4 green leaves on the plants and the bottom three are dead and dried up. if you left them in the ground you would find a clump of garlic growing there next year...you don't want that.

Ok I dug 2 up and they are a little bigger than the ones I planted in march. What would be the down side of leaving them in ground until next fall?

no idea but the down side is planting in the spring - you see the results, planting is in the fall.
