If your Music is the same as mine, the bulbils are tiny. Some weren't much bigger than a grain of wheat last year. However, there were several hundred in each cluster. I did send some out to several gardeners to experiment starting them inside but haven't heard anything positive. A few hundred were planted in a controlled area where I could keep a close eye on them. Although it looked like it was going to be "garlic sod" for awhile, probably only a third of them actually grew. With so little stored energy to begin with, most plants never got beyond two leaves and all "matured" and died within a few days of each other recently. Maximum bulb size, all rounds, was about the size of a marble. Now it will remain to be seen if these will produce a divided bulb next year or make a larger simple round.

Your description of the bulbils sounds exactly like mine. So you got the marble size in one year? and when did you plant them?
what was the percentage of success for the indoors starters? I think that a low success rate is still pretty good, especially if it will reduce the time! Did the indoor starters produce a divided bulb in one year?

My Music bulbils were planted last mid-September 2004, and in a special allium plot outside. Only a few emerged before cold weather arrived and thus virtually all growth was in 3 1/2 months this year. What I'm sitting with now are the marble-sized bulbs awaiting planting in September again. Won't know what happens next until this time in 2006.
