The white worms sound like onion root maggots and would definitely give you the mushy feeling onions. Every second or third year I get them if there is too much organic matter in the top inch of the soil so I've just been adding a light layer of play sand to the top once they've been planted and they seem to stay away. Unless your composter is getting pretty hot, I'd suggest throwing the onions out to reduce the number of maggots and flies for next year.

All that rain probably isn't helping either just in terms of trying to get them to dry down so you'll have to watch out in storage and use the ones that start to go first.

Thanks for the response and also the tip about the sand and also about the possibly of not composting the affected onions. My compost tends to run on the cool side so i will take the onions out of there and dispose of them another way. I was surprised to see the onion worms as there has never been anything of allium family planted there. Talk about RAIN, yesterday was one of the nicesst days EVER until 4 pm when the skies opened up and thunder storms rolled through unril about 8 last night, one after another, with absolute torrrential tropical rains, incrdible thunder and lightning, which is how almost every storm we have had in the last 6 or 8 weeks has been. there was even a tornado a few weeks back that touched down about 30 miles north of here, and did terrible damage. Tornadoes are not a common occurence in New Hampshire!
